OK, I USE THE MXT BY WHITES. I AM PRESENTLY USING THE 6 X 10 DD ECLIPSE LOOP. I HAVE NEVER USED MY STOCK 9.5 LOOP THAT COMES STANDARD WITH MY MXT.
THE REASON I USE THE DD LOOP IS BECAUSE I WAS TOLD IT WOULD GIVE ME MORE STABILITY, MORE DEPTH IN AREAS WITH IRON PRESENT, AND THE SIGNAL GOES STRAIGHT DOWN FROM TIP TO TIP.
I WAS DOING SOME AIR TYPE BENCH TESTS KEEPING MY GROUND TOGGLE IN THE LOCK POSITION. USING A QUARTER AS MY TARGET AND MY 6 X 10 DD LOOP ON BOARD AND LEAVING ALL MY CONTROLS AT THE PRESETS, I COULD ONLY GET A READABLE SIGNAL ADUIO AND VISUAL AT AN 8IN. DEPTH.
NOW I STRAPPED ON THE 9.5 LOOP AND PERFORMED THE SAME TEST. I WAS ABLE TO GET AN EXTRA 1.5 IN. DEPTH ... NEEDLESS TO SAY , I AM CONFUSED NOW.....ANY OPINIONS OR EXPLAINATIONS WOULD BE GREATLY ACCEPTED..........PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR THOUGHTS.................PACO

dont forget the 9.5 is covering a smaller area at depth than the DD, so you would have to overlap more to cover the same ground,i would try a excellerator 12.5 or 14 after you had already pounded a site, would also be nice when locating new sites

Hello Paco,

Thompy is right about your 9.5" coil. It will go a little deeper than the DD, but its area of coverage is much smaller for deeper targets. The area of detection of your 9.5" coil (concentric) is cone-shaped when penetrating the ground. So the deepest targets will have to pass exactly over the center of your 9.5" for you to get a signal. You really need to overlap that 9.5" to make sure you're not missing those deeper targets. The DD coils have a wider area of detection at depth, but not quite as deep. However, in highly mineralized ground, the DD coil will outperform the concentric. I think in your fields, a larger coil would payoff because you have so much ground to cover, and it's not that trashy.

Good luck, bud!

Captn,

You make great points! I just hope PACO decides which coil he wants to sweep on Sunday...time is ticking down.

I picked up a lightly used MXT in June, complete with 4X6, 5.3, and 6X10 coils along with the stock 9.5. In trashy areas, the 9.5 is nearly useless. The 6X10 in the same areas is considerably better, and of course, the smaller two are better yet. For the hunting I do most of the time the 8X10 is my "go to" coil. I find that I really don't like the 9.5 coil as I have had better results with the 6X10. I realize that everyone's hunting styles, areas etc. are different and many may not agree with me, but as I said, for me the 8X10 is my coil of choice over the 9.5.
Hunt hard, dig often,
Bill

Why is this still in Todays Finds? Why was this ever in Todays Finds?

Don't worry about it, dude! ;)

It don't matter where it is since PACO put it where it is so it where stay where it is. ;) :D ;D

Keep in mind that the DD coils aren't affected by interference as much as the 9.5. Thus, you can crank the AC sens and the Preamp up more and still be stable, thus, possibly giving you more depth. Though, given the fact that you are out in a field you may not have wires close by. Still, the DD is more stable, gives better coverage at depth as Cap said. If you really want to dig deeper, get a bigger DD coil, or bigfoot coil.

DD coil is DD, stock coil is concentric, they have different search patterns and the stock coil is going to give you more depth but also see more ground minerals...

If you hit a site and only use one coil, you will be leaving good stuff in the ground... Different search coils will net more finds, not twice as much but more!! But if the larger coil is seeing too many targets it just won't get it done!!

Take both to hunt with next time and if your not comfortable with the stock coil and the boys are cleaning up and your not, by all means go back to what works!! Hey, you did do some testing so your headed in the right direction.

IMHO White's are more sensitive and would stand to benefit the most by choosing the best coil for the site be it targets or minerals, the ground balance or the ability to ground balance is crucial!

Concentric search shape looks like this -> V from the front and this-> V from the side....

DD Search shape looks like this-> I from the front and-> U from the side....

DD = no search overlap needed.
Concentric= search overlap required.

Good luck!

I WOULD JUST LIKE TO GIVE EVERYONE A BIG THANKS. I AM VERY LUCKY TO GET AS MUCH INPUT AS I DID FROM MY QUESTION.......
I LIKE WHAT THOMPY AND CAPTN-SE`S POINT WAS ABOUT THE DETECTION DEPTH. I WILL GET IT FROM TIP TO TIP, RATHER THAN AT THE BOTTOM OF A CONE SHAPED SIGNAL. THE 9.5 WILL GIVE A LITTLE BETTER DEPTH,BUT I HAVE TO BE DIRECTLY OVER THE TARGET. THUS I THINK I CAN RECEIVE THE SAME DEPTH WITH THE DD COIL WHILE USING MORE SENSITIVITY, WITHOUT IT BECOMING TO ERATIC........................THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE

Yo, PACO, I am glad that your metal detecting heart is sticking with the DD loop. ;) Dude, you won't be upset with the results this time around.

Hey Dont get me wrong PACO, the standard STOCK Eclipse 950 coil for the MXT ROCKS and I would not sell it BUT for field huntin, it is HARD to beat that WIDE search pattern of the 10x14. The depth isnt EVERYTHING BUT the wide area per sweep that it scans means MORE GROUND COVERED! With the 950, it is better in closed in smaller spaces so that you can overlap your sweep. Either way bud, the stock 950 is a great coil..Maybe keep on using it for now and get you a DD later on ;) ;)

I may be a little late on this thread but I use a Double D coil on my prizm V and a x-terra 70 and think they are the better of the coils versus the standard round coils. I can cover large swaths of fields and still find the good targets.
