In a previous post, "More stuff I've found" I showed the following frame, telling about the points, but no mention of what is in the middle.

Here we go again, way back when I was a kid, the family went on a picnic out to the Carrizo Plains. Back in those days I think it was mostly private property, although there was an alkali flat that we found .50 caliber links and empty brass where the lake had been a machine gun target for WWII aircraft. Off away from the lake was a huge rock with the name of "Painted Rock." There were lots of Indian paintings on the rock, and people had been vandalizing those paintings long before we were there. I can proudly say that my parents taught us proper respect and we did nothing but look at the paintings. The guy that owned the land had worked up the ground, and he'd even farmed the road out, but we were able to get the old Chevy station wagon out to the rock with the land owners permission. I walked around a bit on the plowed ground, hoping to find an arrowhead. Instead I found this powdery red and yellow rock, which was in no way common rock in the furrows. I picked it up, assuming at the time that it was paint, and at this later stage of my life I'm sure I'm right. We found no other artifacts out there, but there were depressed trails in the solid rock where Indian people had been walking over it long before, so there must have been quite a population at one time. I wish I could find some photos to share, and I might be able to, because I recall my dad took some colored slides. I would be very surprised if the rock hasn't been protected as a by now.

Yellow and red pigment. I would have never though of it as paint pigment, except the location of where I found it.
