Pawn Stars: 1715 escudo

Did anyone see the new episode "Pawn Stars" last night? They received a gold escudo that turned out to be a 1715 escudo that appraised for $18,000. The kid only wanted $2000 coming into the store, and thinking it may be a counterfeit, Rick called the appraiser who blew that out of the water. I think they settled on $10,500, so the kid was able to buy 5 times the amount of crack he had intended.

I couldn't help but think what wreck it may have come from. There was something on the tag that said "Cannons".

The $18,000.00 is high auction retail.
Thats about 15 times bullion value.....

I shouldn't talk however a 1659 Lima Star
or a dated colombian 8 pillar & waves, 8 reale,
with $18.00 worth of silver can bring better than
$10,000.00 to $25,000.00 and up!

I'm glad sunken "spanish treasure" is getting some positive exposure...

I believe a lot of the stuff you see on that show is set up. My bro in law knows the guy that brought in silver spoons that I think where from Ben Franklin and he said that guy never owned anything like that. I would say a lot of it maybe true but some of it is definately set up. Makton

Also, I saw an earlier episode when they called Carl in to validate the authenticity of a ship's bell.

You know, for a reality show, I really like Pawn Stars. Rick, the Old Man, Big Hoss and of course the every funny Chumlee.

Okay, I'll admit it, I'm a little hooked on the show.

Now, if only our local Pawn Shops would give up those types of purchase prices. LOL

I would have expected after hearing $18,000
The old man would have offered $200

That was a really nice 1715 Eight Reale escudo with clear markings. The certificate shown in the background signed by Mel Fisher and Duncan Mathewson gave it the provinence to sell for $11,000. He can get more at auction but the seller had to buy crack NOW! The pawn shop owner bought it. He made a good deal.

This episode just replayed. Guess the kid did not have an internet connection, as that would have been easy to get an idea, but at the time, that $2K was about spot.

Also, if I had a gold coin, I would go to a coin shop, not a pawn shop.

20 yrs on the treasure coast, hitting the 1715 fleet boneyards from vero to sebastian on the beaches during and between hurricanes and I still haven't found coin one. But i'll keep trying. Are you the capt. Dom that came to the meeting of the treasure coast MD club in stuart yrs back with a 50lb bar of silver? Now THERE's a MD find.

Missed the episode, hardly watch the boob tube anymore. Did they say how the kid came about owning it?
Seems a little off for a kid to have purchased something like that.

He really wasnt a kid, but in early 20's. Said it was his grandfathers.
Another show just aired, this time a shipwreck gold bar, est value was $48K, saw the end of it so dont know the circumstances. I think they gave him $35K for it. I keep wondering why people go to a pawn shop with this kind of stuff.
