Found this unfinished scraper and there were lots of flakes all around and the other stone was found nearby. Question is: could it be a pecking stone or just a rock. No other rock of this type was around there.

Fricking Frick, the Mobil app keeps crashing, won't let me upload photos via phone. Hold on.

Nc#2, your pics didn't show. Any luck at the other spot today? It was nice to finally put a face with another member of T-net today. Looking forward to hunting with you!!

Yeah Rusty, it was good to meet you. Funny how we crossed paths today while we were both out hunting. Ha. Only found one tiny chip in the other field and a couple more pieces of that banded rock.

Cool deal. That field you were headed to is a tough one to hunt. So many odd stones to catch your eye. Plenty of stuff is there though.

A pecking stone is hard to really know for sure from just a regular rock. Yours looks to soft maybe quartzite or sandstone? The one I have and most of the other ones I have found have been either flint or quartz.

I can't tell from the pics, what do you look for to id it as a
pecking stone?

I consider a pecking stone the same thing as a hammer stone. I would guess the stone would have to be harder than the one that was being shaped. Otherwise I would think it wouldnt work. As you can see in the pics a hammer stone has some damage on it and the cortex is removed by using it as a hammer. Somebody that knapps probably explain the process better. I have others Ive found. You can enlarge the pics Ive posted.
