Petrified wood can make some pretty nice artifacts, and then again, some forms make some pretty crude looking pieces. Either way, it could be informational to see what's out there that has come from it.

Post any you may have here.

This is the nicest pet wood point I have found. It's about 1 inch.

Here is one that most likely broke while being made.

Very cool. wouldn't have known that's petrified wood.:icon_thumleft:

Hmmm.

I thought we would have more pet wood pieces in the crowd. There was a couple good examples shown already of the wood that doesn't lend itself to nice flaking. I am sure if Larson shows up he will have at least one or two dandies.

quito, is petrified wood native to your area? Wood is hard to knap unless it is agitized.

Very nice point by the way!!

It is fairly abundant in areas of western South Dakota.

I was hunting a lake in Texas with some guys from another forum a few years ago, and there was a lot of pet wood there, but it was nothing like the wood we have up here.

Nice finds everyone . Here are a few from Minnesota I'm not sure if it's petrified wood or just some type of agate material

I found a couple more, but I may have included by accident a KRF. KRF and petrified wood are sometimes quite similar.

The point to me looks more like agate than petrified wood. Any petrified wood I have seen at any knap-in does not look like that, they are not clear. Most agate are clear.
I am not exactly sure how agate is formed, but I have never heard of it referred to as petrified wood.

You don't say what part of the country you are from. Here in Montana, North and South Dakota, petrified wood is found in a crystallized form. We even find opalized wood.

The point that started this post as well as many others referred to as petrified wood are properly described as agatized wood.
Calling all of it petrified wood is common but not really correct

I don't have any but these are very nice thanks for posting !!!!!

Y'all have some beautiful points! Never found one

here is a mandan side notch arrow point made from RBSW (Rainy Buttes Silicified Wood)
this material comes from the Rainy Buttes area which is in SW north dakota (the south edge of the badlands)
the paleos loved this stuff cuz it was easy to work with to make projectile points
it was seldom used for scraper and knife blades as it did not hold an edge very long at all

Nice points guys. Never found pet wood here in NC. Not sure I would recognize it anyway. Not sure if it's something found often down here.
