Pewter George II, Pewter button, 1838 Halfdime

Got some oldies,
my 2nd cft pewter GII HP,
I've dug a lot of 17th c buttons, heres my first of this type,
I see drilled and applied shanks on UKFD no integrals.
solid cast acorn button with integral shank, (way off center)
thin halfdime, 2nd year of issue,
nice brass foliated button & shoe buckle frame,
44 washington was a bonus

The button is one heck of a nice find, I think it is closer to the late 1500s up to mid 1600s era and I would be counting that as a "nipple" doublet button, not acorn, either way a great find.

The KGII HP is in great condition for being a pewter based, I assume this was another find from the water area, otherwise I would think if a land find and pewter it would be crumbling away like my KGII Pewter was when found.

of the relics I find, lead and pewter buttons seem to be the oldest.
these metals are often better preserved in water than land, contrary to
copper and silver. the old pewter gets a very hard black exterior,
that blistering is a drawback though..
am seeing 1737 on the reverse along with exuerge and shield.
here's the other one I got earlier, crude casting with sprue.
wonder if these were defective throwaways by the maker or discards

from whoever they were passed to

Good seeing you posting again Herbie! Was wondering if everything was ok. Awesome finds (as usual)! You really know how to pull the old stuff. Beauty of a half dime. Reverse looks slightly rotated but that was relatively common back then. Keep em comin!

nice george it wouldnt be made of pewter i think its just the soil that has made it that way

Jimmy, the readings for these coins are consistent with pewter not copper,
as is the surface appearance. coppers found here dont turn black and blistery.
as I stated in my op, this site has produced several period copies 18th and early 19th C,
other evidence this may have been a site where they were produced are impressions of coins on sheet lead found.
here's a lead copy of an 1801 US Cent, it is almost double the weight of a genuine.

That button certainly appears to be from the Tudor period herbie . I told Crusader a while back that a Tudor period find was one of my big M-Ding goals here in Maine . He replied that coins from that period do show up from time to time here on this side of the pond but rarely a button or clothes fastener. A find to be proud of for sure ! Congrats ! I was hoping the Europeans would chime in on it . Have you looked on the UK finds index for a match ? M.R.

Cool Finds,Herbie I'll give all I know on the button,I found one simular myself on a site that has given up tudor dated finds,from buckles to other type buttons,& quite a few early 17th century finds as well.Here's the one I found.....pics. below.

Here's another that's close to falling under that type shape it's more doomed then the other larger group of the convex buttons I've found so it's a little different it self...........
