I found two pewter USA buttons today in a field near 1/4 mile from the Indian village of Catherine`s Town wiped out by Gen. Sullivan in 1779, i think these buttons are period.
I also found a dropped three ringer,we don`t see many of these this far north .
Found a lot of beer cans and iron too.

WOW Gary!! Anything from that campaign has to be hard to find!! Congrats on such nice buttons!!

Awesome digs!

Gary, Congrats on the well deserved BANNER, can't wail to see them in person.

Excellent find Gary, and two of them will look great together in your display case.

As far as disintegrating over night, well that may be true of some, I don't have them all, but it certainly isn't true of many. I guess an experiment I never coated my RP from 3-4 years ago, and there has been NO deterioration what so ever, nor has there been for any other pewter button I found. I do check often on my very rare 4th reg. button found this past summer, so far it's doing just fine too.

I never liked to put oils, or gunk on any of my coins, so was reluctant to put anything on my buttons, even though I guess the wood glue is a reverseable process. One main reason is if you ever want to do further cleaning, oils, greases, etc. would be problematic for any further processing.

And take this with a grain of salt, but I would have cleaned that rougher looking one a bit before putting something on it. Anywho that is neither here nor there, they are, and will always be great finds, and I will admit that "better safe than sorry"

Good for you well deserved find(s)
Best of luck should head back to that site...I would.

Every Relic/ person is different .
Soooo, To each his own way.

Awesome Buttons Gary.
IMO Could not have happened to a nicer Guy.

Looking more closely at your buttons, you appear to have 2 different varieties. The one on the left is ....AUSA-sb. The left one is AUSA-sd. Just different variants. If I am correct, the SB, or the most common, should have measured 18mm. The SD is just a slight variant of the SB at 18mm. Very Kool! Hogge

Hit that field hard. Amazing buttons in good shape.

Nice buttons. I've been hunting for one of those for years !

Come up anytime and see them...if you can go Sunday i`ll put you right on that spot, and see if you can pick one out with your Tesoro ...those fields are massive.
Gary

Congrats on the banner and those buttons are awesome!

Sweet! That's probably the first ever time the letters "USA" were placed on something in representation of the United States.

Wow, small world! I detected in that same exact location in the late 1990s. No banner finds for me, though! I did manage a really sharp, non-corroded 1867 Indian cent about a mile or two down the canal from that spot and a very nice 1870s era military button. Best I got in that field was a couple of cuff buttons that looked 19th century. I live in Texas now, so you won't have to worry about me raiding your spot any time soon. ;)

Congrats on a VERY well-deserved banner!!

They add a different flavor to the banner too.Look good up there!Congrats again on those buttons.very very nice!

Yes i think they look good up on the top.... the USA shows up pretty good.
Gary

We've got Rev War buttons serving as bookends on the banner, but I'll have to admit yours has a little better optics than the snake and stars. Nice going on that pair of gorgeous artifacts!

I'm very happy to see your buttons on banner. Absolute top find and something I would hold above many common gold coins.
