I got out for a few hours this morning to look for a site that goes back to at least 1876, according to an old map I have. I am not sure if it was a home; I have heard that it was a fenced in hunting area at one time. That may explain the tag with the number 53? I did not find any ammo, so I am questioning this. I did find the '41 Merc and the '55 Rosie, both about 6 inches deep. I also a found bottle dump with bottles going back to the same era. The Wheaties are also 1940's & '50s. I am hoping to get back to find some older coins.

Any ID on this type of tag is appreciated.

*Cleaned up the bottles. See the reply below...

Way to go Neil - Your taming that beast in a hurry :)

Keep up the good finds !

Re: New Spot yields some older silver, wheats and bottle dump

Hello Neal!
Nice job on the coins!

That tag looks too modern day to be very old. Plus, the hook would have surely rusted away?

The bottles cleaned up pretty nicely. Most likely WWII era, which coincides with the coin dates. The Suburban Dairies Audubon NJ bottle is from somewhere between 1911-1925. I found that one a while back.

Great finds Neil....love those old bottles. So many varieties over A LOT of years...very cool!

I've seen those tags before and have heard others refer to them as 'cattle tags'....and some think they go back as far as 'oxen tags'. ::)

Either way....Thanks for sharing!

Nice finds!!!

By the way, "Two roads diverged in a wood
And I detected both of them
And that has made all the difference"

No disrespect intended. Just a joke.
