I need some help with pinpointers....I've got a bullseye from whites but it almost has to touch the object to work...is this the norm or are there better ones out there?

Some of the more expensive ones are a little stronger. The best is the inline type probe which is actually a tiny coil and can reach up to 4 inches in all metal. Inline probes also will show the target on your detectors meter if you have one.

I have an "Inline" probe for my Whites DFX and love it. I don't know if I could say it gets 4 inches, my friend has
a "Bullseye" probe and he calls me over all the time to find the target with my probe.
I think that it will give a fairly good target sound at about 2 inches from the target in Descrim, it seems not to be
so far in all metal, but I only switch it over if the target seems big and I can't "pinpoint" it with the descrim mode.

Best investment I have ever made as far as a "tool" to help me with Metal detecting. I would not buy a handheld
probe again.

I use a Fisher F-Point (was free with detector package) and a Merlin SXL. They both do the job. I prefer the momentary "on" botton of the Merlin, and it has an LED light that can help in deep holes, but the Fisher is waterproof and a handier shape. I end up invariably using the F-Point so that must truly be the one I like better. The Merlin is the best stud finder I've ever used and it paid for itself many times over when I refinished my in-laws vacant house prior to marketing it.

A probe (like Sunray) will reach 4", but then you have the opposite problem. It's too good to pinpoint whether the target is deeper down or in the side of the hole if your initial scoop was off target. I can "detune" it with the pinpointing trigger on my detector, but I can't say that's handy when I'm kneeling and digging. I just got mine and I've only had a limited time to practice with it but it will no doubt make the handhelds redundant.

The best bet with any is to take the time to pinpoint the target well initially with the main detector.

Your inline probe has a control box that the coil cable plugs into. The box attaches to the shaft. One out going cable goes to the DFX control box and another longer cable has the inline probe on the end that you can attach to the shaft when not in use. The probe's control box has a two position switch, one for cable and the other side for probe. Just think of the probe as a tiny long coil that works with your screen.

My last pinpointer I left at a football field on the bleachers....
Did not remember until I went hunting again a few days later...

that's when I bought the Sunray.  I do not have any problem with forgetting and leaving this one... and pinpointing in a dug whole is even better if its on the side of the hole....  I can find it fast.

Some really nice Pin pointers out there, I myself use the Treasure Mate made by Tesoro.
Comes with a holster and easy to set up, a 9V battery can last you a year and depth is great.
Can't understand how some one could leave their PP laying and walk off and forget it , at most on your next target you would realize duh!! I left it laying at the last dig..

I use mine and then back in the holster, and yes I am knocking on wood as now it just might happen

For me I try to use as less cables as I can so as not to get tangled up with each other or a shrub, branch, or what ever.

Also some in line probes are machine spective, don't like that.

Good Luck on your choice, as I stated sure are some good one's out there.

I am like...GaryL ...I don't like inline because of the extra cable just to much cable to be messing with they are real good pinpointers the inline but not for me........ i like the freedom of a cable free pinpointer ........and like GaryL said you can only use the inline with the detector you buy it for i don't like that either .........i like a lot of..FREEDOM not tied down with limited use and extra cable.......My self i like the Vibraprob 570 ...............==Jim==
