Hi folks,

As I've mentioned in any number of posts....I'm REALLY new new to metal detecting and the ATP specifically.

My only other experience in this hobby has been with a Garret ACE-150 (That I've had an absolute blast with the last
6 months).

Learning to pinpoint that big "DD" coil on the ATP has been "fun" (lol) the last few days (I've only got about 7hrs on it) in
the neat old (Heavily trashed) park that I spend most of My time hunting in. I've watched ALL the Garrett vid's and a ton
of others showing how to run the machine in trashy areas (With the stock coil) but....I'm still a little confused.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated. I have about NO ego so...feel free to be cruel and set me straight 8-)

HELP! lol

No one needs to b cruel dude we all had to learn sometime have u tried when u get a hit not even using the pinpoint button get ur hit then go just alittle slower turn 90 degrees & do it again just watch where ur gettin the hit alot of people dont use the pinpointing feature. Cuz the machine is just very acurate, u could also try doin an x on the target to if none of this works what did for y wife is I did these 2 things
- bury a target & Mark it with something plastic & practice the x or the turning 90 degrees
Or just drop a coin on the ground & use ur pinpoint button & watch the signal get stronger move around seein what área on the coil its strongest at

Try it this way for a faster pinpoint. When you get a hit that you decide to recover, slowly wiggle the coil while slowly pulling it back toward you. When the signal stops, slowly slide the coil forward till you rehear the signal again and the item should be just off the front of the coil. Lots faster than turning 90 degrees and you may not have to dig a plug but pop it out.

Ya cuz it takes so long to stand in place & turn. Either way both of these methods should help u in pinpointin just find one ur comfortable with

I have found that one method isn't always the go to method using the 8.5x11 in a trashy area.

Sometimes you have to pinpoint at the front or rear of the coil.

Other times the wiggle as you back the coil up works, pinpointing from the tip.

Then there is the standard crossing pattern. Sometimes turning at a 90 works, sometimes you have to turn at a 45 or another angle to avoid other targets.

In the end, it's all about practice and learning to isolate the target you want using the 8.5x11.

When you find the target, start pin pointing and find the center of the target horizontally on your coil (left to right movement). Once you find the center horizontally, move the coil up and down along that axis until you find the middle. Then to confirm you have it pin pointed, turn the pin pointing off and on again very fast, which will reduce the pin pointing circumference of the coil. This allows for a very precise pin point. You can repeat this step multiple times, but usually after the second time I always have the target dead on. Once you have done this, dig below the first hole in the coil in front of where the brackets meet (the + shape in the coil).

Yes

Thanks for the advice folks.

I've been working a lot the last week and am MD'ng in the mornings after I get off (From work). I've used your folks advice
to pretty good effect.

I'm slowly getting used to that coil (My 5X8 from Bart should show up on Thursday...'can't wait!) and...considering that I've got
about twice the time on the machine since I posted this (lol) ...things are going much better 8-)

Thanks again.

Good to hear putting the 5x8 on the Atpro turns it basically into another detector lighterin weight, more balanced, easier to pinpoint,a lot more precise in the tot lot/ trashy areas, it hardly ever comes off my pro unless I hit a large yard or feild. Good luck

Thanks man. I'm excited about getting it (I ordered it from Bart and he made me a really good deal...as usual) and the Pro-Pointer that's coming with it. I was 3ft deep in the
water this morning digging a high tone (For about 20 min's...lol) in the gravel and thought...."gee, it doesn't look this hard in the Beau Ouimette videos..."lol!:laughing7:

I KNOW, I'm going to have to water-proof the 'Pointer (Beau's got a vid' where He shows how). I can't wait(!) lol

Nice propointer to huh careful man its addictive buying detectors & equipment a day ago just bought another propointer just in case anything happens to mine or cuz 2,is better then 1 lol. I'm on watch from the wife on buying equipment there's a lot more then in my profile Haha ad that to the gun collection & other hobbies surprised she doesn't kill me. Good luck man

LOL, I don't know if you saw My introduction post from a couple of weeks ago but (Horn Touting coming...lol), I'm a US Army "Small Arms Repairman" (45B) with the ORNG.

I'm also a "Gun-Nut" in My spare time.

This place reminds me sooooo much of some of the gun boards I belong to...lol. If you don't like/use XYZ rifle/pistol...(?)....well....you're just....GAY...or somethin'. lol

Nice I apreciate all u & everyone else who has served us

Some great input here...While I realize that not every coil is identical, it would seem that the normal "center" of the coil, or the bullseye as it pertains to pinpoint would be somewhat the same on each coil.
Is the coil image on the left the normal pinpoint center of the AT Pro stock coil?
Is the coil image on the right representative of the wiggle method?

The left picture is supposed to be where it pin points, according to garret! Mine seems to be exactly under the stem,bolt/connection. The right picture is where mine pinpoints using the wiggle method. Both coils 8.5 X 11,and 5 X 8 pin point in the exact same locations. I like to use the "wiggle back" method best. I can make a very small recovery hole using it,if the target is shallow!

I have to agree with pinpointing from the tip. Whether it be the wiggle or by pulling back straight back after centering left to right.

Using the tip to pinpoint is much easier if you are using the stock 8.5x11".

A deep target will pin point about an inch inside the tip of the coil...with the pull back method.

Good idea on the extra propointer! I don't know what I'd do without mine now and it's acting funny sometimes!! And right on about the addictive buying! I started metal detecting the end of May when I bought my first ever detector, the AT Pro, prior to that I was spending all my fun money on guitar's and amplifiers.....and already it has entered my mind that I don't need so many amps etc,.....I could sell some and buy another detector! AT Pro is great and perfect for me where I'm at, in the NW, but would also love something that goes really deep! On the other hand, I have been working my fanny off digging 6-8 inch holes and sometimes deeper than that! All for pennies, a few nickels, dimes and quarters, tokens and trash, getting better at not getting so much trash, I'm beginning to think there is no silver left in the ground in Oregon...but it is an addictive hobby, every time I see the round shape of a coin I get excited! I may have to resort to buying my first merc, would love to find one of those.

I use the normal pinpoint method and pinpoint exactly where it is shown on the image on the left. I do wiggle my detector back and forth and at 90 degrees also but mainly when trying to tickle an iffy signal into a better signal. I've never pinpointed off of the front yet.

I find it much easier to mark the spot on the tip of the coil than through the center.
