Poppa's Got a Brand New Bag!
Hi gang, my modem has been replaced by one that actually works. Thanks to the thunder storms we had in my area the day before yesterday I was without access to the internet till this morning. Coincidence or not, the modem quit working about time lightning hit a tree in my front yard during the storm. My computer(s) is on a power strip, as is my cable modem... different power strips even... but nothing else was affected, the tv's were on (cable).. the computer was on.. the router was on.. everything was working except the cable modem.. and it was powered up, just not talking via ethernet to the router.. or even computer when I wired it directly to the computer as a test. Weird.. anyway, the cable company came out and tested the modem from MY end (had already tried via their end) and concluded that the modem was not functioning, and promptly replaced it with a brand new one. Soooo.. I'm back online and dangerous as ever! <grin>
After taking my wife to Kentucky's "other city" , Louisville, to a conference that her not for proffit organization was attending, I got a chance to go check out one of that city's older parks. Well.. after I made a side trip to an Army Surplus store. I had to get a sheath or pouch or something to Carry my digging tool in. I've been packing it around in my back pocket but besides getting dirt in my BACK POCKET.. I was.. well.. wearing a tender spot on my backside. NOT GOOD! <blushing> So to save my tushy from any more wear and tear I vowed to find something to carry my digger in other than my back pocket.
I tried several different tools for digging before I found this one, everything from garden hand shovels, to cement trowels, to chisels and a few other improvisations along the way. When I found the tool I'm currently using at Home Depot I knew I had found my "tool" <grin> There are several names it's sold under, depending on the store you buy it from I guess, but the one Home Depot sells is under the "Ames" brand name. Called the "Planter's Buddy" <smile> Hey! It's a multi use tool for metal detectorists.. can dig a plug, can cut through sod and roots with ease, can be used to tamp down the reseated plug after you are done.. and it can even be used as a weapon for self defense I suppose.. it's rather menacing looking at first glance. Here's a advertisement for it.

Anyway.. I went looking for a sheath or pouch to carry this hardware around in rather than soiling my britches and wearing a tender spot on my.. um.. tender spot. And a pouch I *DID* find! Thank you to the U.S. Army. I'm sure that carrying a digging tool was NOT what the designers of this pouch had in mind but it fits perfectly. It's not a quick draw, but I'm thinking I can modify it some if I want to gain easier or at least faster access to my digger, but it works fine as is. What's more, it has a couple of heavy duty snaps on the cover flap to secure it.. no more having to back track down your detecting path or grid looking for that dropped digger! Only thing I don't particularly like is the web belt design "hitch" It has a bayonet slider that slips over the belt rather than a loop that the belt slips through. <shrug> Oh well, I have a utility belt that will work fine with it.
Well, now that my backside was "covered" I set out to find this OLD OLD OLD park in Louisville Kentucky. I followed my mapquest directions and found the park entrance after a couple of drive bys in the wrong direction. *sigh* Yeah, I'm not from around here folks!. Anyway. Once in the park I drove around looking the whole park over and trying to decide where I could spend my whole hour or so of detecting time I had left... after all, I still had to drive back to Lexington and home.
Shawnee Park, Louisville Kentucky. The park was formerly known as Fountain's Ferry Park.. an amusement park of it's day.. closed in 1960. All the amusements are now gone..gone are the food vendors. Gone are the game booths. Gone are the kiddie rides and merry-go-round. Gone are the thrill rides.. the roller coasters the tilt-a-whirl, the hanging baskets, the ferris wheel. All that remains are the locations that these attractions used to occupy... grown over with beautiful grassy lawns, huge shade trees, and the occasional duck or goose that flock to the ponds and pools in the park.
I might have had more luck had I known WHERE exactly these rides and attractions were situated in their former glory, alas, I did not. And, with time short and running out as I drove around I fell back on tried and true experience and knowledge... go where the people congregate NOW. Namely, the ball fields and parking lots for same. Anywhere there are bleachers and concession stands there will be coins to be found, and Shawnee park did not disappoint me. I found coins.. I found over five dollars in coins.. in less than an hour! Even with a gaggle of bemused and curious tweenies following me around. *sigh* I should get used to wearing my head phones only on one ear. That way I can hear my detector AND the questions being machine gunned at me by the half a dozen curious Georges (and Georgettes) following me around. Well.. at least till I had dug up perhaps my 11th or 12th pull tab.. they kind of lost interest in my actions after that. "Awww maaaan.. it's more crap!" <laughing>
I didn't show them the pouch full of coins that I was carrying.. as I smiled innocently to myself as they trudged off to find something else to satisfy their curiosity. 14 Quarters, 10 Dimes, 1 Nickle, and 46 Pennies... and about 25 pull tabs, one mangled pair of sunglasses, two broken pieces of electrical outlet box, one CO2 cartridge, and a single lipstick tube. I dumped all but the pull tabs and coins in the nearest garbage can before setting off for home.
$5.01 in less than an hour.. not bad, not bad at all! And, on my way out of the park I drove past two other metal detectorists who were standing near the park road chatting. I should have stopped and said hi, but I was hungry and I had a long drive. If anyone on here WAS one of those two gentlemen in Shawnee Park this evening, I apologize for not having stopped and saying hello at least. If life is good and there is another chance that I can get back over to Louisville to detect in Shawnee Park again, perhaps We Will meet.
Till then.. Happy Hunting all !
