With the cold air finally hitting my area and possible snow cover this weekend, this might have been my last hunt for 09 and I was hoping to not get skunked. I went to the site I got a 1775 KGIII Halfpenny and 1802 Large Cent in the same hole back in October and it also produced a decorative 100% complete shoe buckle. InCellarhole.webpHoleCTfoundat.webp

Well, today I got another shoe buckle, LOL, about 1/2 inch of one, but better than not getting any at all...... I was lucky enough to dig a very iffy reading, was almost sure it was going to be an iron hunk but it turned out to be a copper on complete edge! As I scanned the hole I dug with the SR-1 Probe, I was pleasantly surprised to see the copper sticking to the side wall of the hole about 6 inches down, no wonder it gave a funky reading and that I missed it on my two previous hunts! Afterall, it was only 3 feet away from where I dug the two coppers together in October!CTdirty.webp

I continued hunting and found 3 buttons, one a Tombac and the other two no backmarked ones, all indicating late 1700s for dating and site was probably occupied end of the 1790s thru very early 1800s.

I got another signal that could have been a shotgun casing, or even a button or half dime, but not a copper, that was for sure. The signal was in a small depression adjacent to the larger home depression in the ground. It was hard to find in the clay gumbo soil, but there it was, my third solid silver cufflink for the year! I was hoping for a design, but after cleaning it at home, no evidence of any, but sure is high grade silver.SilverCufflink.webp17Dec09Finds.webpSite243Finds17Dec09.webp1785M.6.4-I Site243red.webp

I might get out again after Christmas, weather dependent, if not, 2009 has been a great year for me regardless.

Congratulation on the finds! The button is a beauty, and the cleaning job on the Conn. is an inspiration (as usual! :D) ....a constant reminder of what 'could have been' had some of us used your method early in the game lol.. Don, curious what is the average depth you're digging for most of these? Have you found anything deep enough to conclude there might be more at greater depth that you're missing? (fingers crossed that the answer is "yes", as in my similar sandy woods I'm banking on ghost signals at this point :D)

What previously stood there, was it an old homestead? Just curious, Bryan

It most likely was a small cabin site of a sawmill worker, there was a 1790s to about 1815 at most sawmill nearby. I do not believe it was involved with any farming and the finds were all confined to a small area, thus thinking a single individual who resided there perhaps no more than 15-20 years.

Thanks Don, it is cool to look at your pics and imagine an old cabin there back in the day

Awesome hunt DON! always impressed!

This is the way to end a good year for Don in SJ. The Conn is one of my favs and the cufflink is icing on the cake. The coin looks like it was pulled from a Pa cornfield due to condition but I always say that as long as it can be identified then it was well worth it.

You defiantly have the knack for the spots Don. Nice digs.
