Inspired by IronPatch...no brainer for me. This should be a good thread if everyone who has ever dug military participates...post em up!

1790-1815 Royal Artillery Sword Cross Belt Plate

I found two of these this year. This one being the best.

This is my 1810 US militia artillery officers sword belt plate found this summer at an old cellar hole abandoned since the 1880's I am especially proud because of the research and effort it took to even find the site in the woods.

THAT is so flippin awesome. What's the story behind finding the place? Did you know it might have some military significance before you found the area?

No it was the first of many such relics on the site. Our guys could have lobbed cannon balls at each other though!

Like IP says ..... finds can and will happen no matter where you are.
So, i'm gonna add my 2 favorites to this great thread. I'm no where near a military site.

No.1 A heart martingale which Mark Parker replied - may well have seen military action.



No.2 A US Calvary Curb Bit Chain Found in the early 80's with my Coinmaster 4 D/B

The story of finding the cellar hole; I use maps from the 1867 county atlas and 1905 topo maps as well as modern topos and compare them all to find homesites that appear on the 1867 map and are gone by 1905 then make a guess where that spot is on a modern topo then use that maps GPS data to get me there using my GPS handheld unit. In this case there were no signs at all of the old home site in the old groth forest and my educated GPS guess was off by only 100 yards or so so I went in all metal and ran lines looking for the iron patch. as soon as i hit the iron it was almost dark I hunted the iron for about an hour I found my first seated in 5 minutes then an Indian cent and I knew I had found my spot. I might be the only living soul who knows that it exists. On this site I found relics spanning late 1700s to mid 1800s in 2010 I will be using my new explorer to hunt it for my first 1700s coin!

That would have been one for restoration! Any idea where it is now? Has it been restored?

Only thing I ever heard was it broke in the attemp, but I can't be 100% sure of that. It was a nasty bend so something I had no intentions to test my luck on. I assume it's still with the same collector down South.

I figure most were worn by the KAR so that is very possible.

I have two I know are with the help of (Iron Patch),(DonSj),(JohnnyI)! The first two Pics.
10 Reg.Continental Army & A British Naval Lieutenant button.
The third Pic.I added one that came from the same site that I feel is also but was hard to see and still is!

The last Pics. I was hoping for input on as they are three heavy made buttons found with Spanish cobs
and cut bird shot that when I look the shot up it is always spanish related it seems.And with the info from this site could be spanish military buttons.http://www.artifacts.org/Mission.htm
Anyway guy's if you don't think they are I'll be glad to remove them as I'm only going by these sites and have no books or nothing saying for sure.Thanks!

Wow so many nice finds! Makes me want the spring to come that much quicker. here's my 2 best buttons, 1st Regiment Mass. Volunt. Militia, and a Duke of Wellington 33rd Regiment.

Shells

Guess this doesn't constitute one find but these were all found in a corridor maybe 75 yards wide x 150 yards long. My now long time partner and I hadn't been out too much together when I uncovered one shell in someone else's abandoned dig hole. After that my partner went nuts on CW artillery - you can see some of the result - he found 8, me 4...of course he was working nights at the time. Located in Northern VA. If you look at that solo shell, you'll see a rock beside it. If you look closely you'll see a groove. That shell buried itself in the rock creating the groove. The rock actually was on top of the shell. I was fortunate enough to be able to recover both. 11 - 10# Parrots, 1 - 20#er.

Shoot, military huh? Hmmmmmmmmn, One thing not found in abundance in my area is military relics and buttons. I have a Eagle Box plate, believe 1840s, and did find the only known USTE button, so guess have to say those two are my favorite of the military finds...............
I sold the USTE button back in the mid 90s, but heard it resold for about 4 times what I got, wow, but, at the time the amount I got was to me a great amount.

Did find a 1840s Eagle Boxplate years back.

Also a Martingale, but do not know for sure if it is considered Military or not............

LOL, I forgot about my best find for 2009, I guess that is considered Military, the Union Greens button, circa 1812.
