Pottery shards finds from familys property

I don't know a whole lot but I just Wanted to share my little finds

Hey Fla Gal...I do most all my hunting on family property and there is a special connection you kinda feel to the past inhabitants. May seem strange to some, but not me, or you apparently.
So good on you for taking up your familys' cause. Pass your newfound knowledge on to your younguns'. It is like planting a seed.

They are right pottery means a good chance for some camp/occupation. Maybe for a long time. Pottery is important to find because it means the people were no longer as nomadic looking for the next meal and they had time to be creative and think up new technology.Create a village.But many good village sites were recognized by every culture but not every culture had pottery.The pottery you are finding now could just be the tip of the iceberg. I know, Fla iceberg!

When pottery came on the scene it changed everything.With the means of storing things also it became more productive to raid one another...

Not everybody knows this but besides the material itself the method it was dried and fired can have a lot to do with the color.

yep the way it was made real black up north where i find it was by adding ash to it

Thanks Larson.. I did not know that about your area.
1 factor in the color differences here is whether or not it was buried during the firing process.
The less oxygen allowed to reach the piece the darker it will turn out.
After the fire burns down to embers the whole batch of "greenware" was often buried with the coals to finish the process.
Sometimes uneven amounts of oxygen would creep in and leave what is called "cloud marks" by many folks.. here is one example of that.
