Normally, I wouldn't post a single IHC find. However, this 1892 Indian Head Cent was found in a park here in town that has been beaten by MDers. There is something special about pulling an old coin out of a well-hunted area (any similar stories guys?). That's why I posted this find. I previously found two old (1918, 1920) wheaties and a 1942 Merc within about twenty yards of where the IHC was found, so I had a feeling something good might be close. This thing was pretty crusty coming out of the ground (sorry, no pic), so I did a light lemon juice treatment and added a little black wax to bring some contrast back. 1892IHC.webp

Thanks for reading guys! HH.

thats pretty cool!, what setting were you running on the atpro?

Indian Heads have me a bit puzzled. On the average, most of the ones I've found came up around 65! A little lower than expected. :dontknow:

Thanks cjon455! Generally, I 1) turn on in "pro" coin mode, 2) ground balance, and 3) set iron disc to 10. Usually this allows me to hear when a "good tone" is iron-associated or not, but without Fe disc so low that all the iron sounds drive me crazy. But in this case, I don't think the settings were the key to success. The IHC was only 4-5 inches deep and came in ~70-80 on the VDI. For me, the key is to try to do a quick MD survey of the entire area, hope to get lucky enough to find a spot with some older coins (the 1918 and 1920 wheaties in this case), and then hit that area hard. Based on those wheaties, I was actually hoping for a buff or a barber, but heck I'll take an Indian any day!

I agree, WHADIFIND. The Indian Heads seem to come in a bit lower than I would expect too. In my previous post, I noted that several IHCs came in around 65-75. But in contrast to things like "tin foil," they generally sound solid enough to warrant digging.

indians are always worth a post..... I love indians

WTG on the IH Cent! Those are rewarding to find on any hunt! :icon_thumright:

Nice find Tin Foil.

I have not found an indian with my AT Pro yet but on my whites detectors they always read 10 points lower on the scale.

I hit a town common that was pounded to death down the street from where i work - I decided to go and give it a try - real slow
guy runs out and says - "you know how many guys have hit here? - i own a machine and live across the street - youre not gonna find anything...maybe some new pennies" I told him I dont believe any place is worked out - I was going real slow - got a faint reading - dug down about 7 in. and got same as you - a nice IH
- I went to another old park - once again guy came and said he'd been hitting it for years - he was alittle nicer about it and even said - "if youre gonna get something old - its gonna be real deep here if I missed it - once again worked real slow and right up against the side walk got a faint reading and got a 1864 IH on edge.

with the hammered spots - i hit close to the road - lot of guys dont like hitting near where people might yell at tem or even throw pennies at them
I try hitting near any big trees - especially with big roots - lot of coins end up on edge because of the roots or guys give up near roots because of falsing or they can not dig around them well

I try to find the spots that others wont try - under bushes - real low trees - got to remember 50 yrs ago - they might not have even been there

near man hole covers - fences - sidewalks - etc
I hit a small median/park that was an old trolley stop and bus stop
was pounded by tons of guys - when I was younger - there seemed like there was always a guy with a machine there
but they always seemed to hit towards the middle and never went near the road - I went there one day and worked a side walk near the road
ended up with a beautiful barber quarter and beautiful SL quarter - right up against the cement down like 4-5 inches
I also got about a dozen IHs down about a foot that they missed
so dont pass up a spot that - you think is cleaned or your told is cleaned out - doesnt hurt to give it a swing

Thanks for sharing CASPER-2! I have definitely had a similar experience of finding goodies in the more out of the way parts of parks (like you said, under shrubs and for me at the perimeters of the parks) and in the sidewalks near the roads (where people are takings keys out of their pockets change follows). It's easy to avoid the remote areas b/c we assume they are low yield, but as you said, sometimes we don't know what was there 100 years ago. If I hunt near the road I like to get started very early in the AM (or even in the rain) to avoid the lookie-loos and chatty kathies:hello:
