Private Archie Dig - Day 4.....

Although I'm calling this Day 4, they have done more digging days than this, so this is just the days that I have visited.
The rubble has extended much further than we expected & nearly takes up half of the trench. What is odd, is that at the most interesting end where they have punched through a layer of rubble, there seems to be a disturbed layer underneath that has less rubble in it. Anyways we need to get deeper.
Yesterday we had 8 volunteer Archies!
I spent 3 hours doing the spoil & I picked up another 2 scrappies in the area around the trench. I was also given the only scrappy to come out of the trench so that Dad & I could ID & record it with the British Museum. (It's a Emperor leaning on shield)
One end has a post hole with the post still in it & it goes real deep! (we think it might be Georgian!)

very awesome to be able to do that, so much hidden history in the ground. those digs enable one to find the non metal finds as well in greater numbers.

Great post. I like to see these digs. How different they are compared to ours here with other soil. So difficult to see discolouration in that black soil. Best thing is you could dig. I did two hrs today and had to fight 3" frozen top soil. Killed one spade but no coin.

As it's mostly in a disturbed context (ie. ploughed land) we have only gone with a pretty cheap Garmin that is only accurate to 11Ft.

Nope, not that we are aware of.
The issue is wood from the Roman period only survives in very wet conditions & we can't believe its Roman or Saxon. However, we are calling in a wood expert to find out.
