Hey folks.... I'm convinced myself that I want a .17 rifle. I've been researching many different models and accessories. I'm leaning toward a Model 93 Savage w/heavy floating barrel, thumb hold stock, bolt action (5 shot) and the adjustable accutrigger. I want to mount a bi-pod and get a GOOD high powered scope also for it. Now with that said I got to thinking about how the ordering goes....?

I bought a .22 auto at a Wal-Mart about 10 years ago. Waited for the background check and got the rifle. But I did all of this in person and wonder how it works just using the internet. Maybe you can't.... but it doesn't start that at many different sites.

Does ANYBODY know for sure how this works (if it does)? Thanks.... Brad

Background check will be done online by filling out a page with your info....name...DL number...SS number...DOB etc etc. (The FFL dealer does this...not you...you just do paperwork)
Rifle will be ordered in same manner you order anything else from Amazon or Ebay.....then shipped to the closest FFL dealer of your choice....
Before "accepting" rifle you should inspect to make sure all is well....a good FFL dealer will ship back at no cost to you if not perfect....
FFL dealer will charge you a handling fee of roughly $40 for being the middle man...so to speak....

That is it in a nutshell. Pretty easy and painless experience.

Ditto on what hunter said............

Thanks guys... I've never ordered a rifle online or inquired until now. After you mentioned the "middle man" it makes more sense to me. It just seemed way to easy to order online and have shipped UPS to me directly. So I'll have to go to the nearest licensed dealer for pick-up... ok. Now if the $40.00 fee is roughly correct I don't really know if I'd save much money ordering online or just ordering from a dealer....?

Any ideas, thoughts or opinions...?

Thanks again.... Brad

Call around to places within driving distance to check their prices on the handling fee.

You may find some awesome place that charges like $10 for handling...who knows.

I should clarify....the local FFL dealer will do the background check. You will not type anything out yourself. There will still be background check paperwork you fill out for a hardcopy. From there the FFL dealer types it into a computer....some call it in still.

My dealer is $40 for background and the delivery. So that is where the cost comes from...it will be unavoidable. Find the best price on the rifle you want...then combine that with the cheapest FFL handling and background fee.

Limitool,

Here's my 2 cents, from an old friend and avid firearm owner. Go to a local dealer or two and get prices on the weapon you want. A national chain like Academy or Dick's too. You'll probably be a lot better off and the price won't really be that much different when you start adding it all up, if any in some cases. You'll walk out with your weapon in hand and be happier with that too! Just my humble opinion.

Just make sure all your "I's" are dotted and "T's" crossed there, Lee Harvey (HAHAHA)

Hey buddy.... Good to hear from ya. Yea... I'm going to go to a dealer(s) and price check/order. It just seems now a whole lot easier and more convenient. And they'll probably help me out with "other" options/questions also. I'd like a hard shell case also. I just ordered 4 thousand rounds of .17 ammo today. So I'll have plenty of ammo when I get the rifle in. Can't wait to get started....!

hey while you are at it Brad get me an old lever-action 30-30. we'll haggle on price later ( I was thinking about $150)

Keep "thinking".... :occasion14:

Local dealer orders for me.
He can usually get a better price than I can,he deals with the shipping and even with my fee to him for his part of the deal,it's usually still a cheaper way to go than my price as a non dealer/FFL holder. The old rule of thumb when less dealers were around was 10% over dealer invoice.

I then buy from him. Thank you very much!

Research barrel break in procedure to gain some value out of your new rifle.
Sadly though, headspace is nearly universally per industry standards..sloppy.
While there are exceptions..the majority are not the greatest by far.
At least a decent barrel break in helps salvage some potential.

The following is not a promotion for a service, only for a better explanation of accuracy barriers in some rifles chambers/throats.
The man works with limited models anyway...
Basically ,sloppy tolerances allow bullet wobble off center from the very start and then it still has to crash into throat and rifling following that.
A marble in a sewer pipe vs tight piston aligned in a bore.
The distance of the jump before engaging rifling and the accuracy of the rifling's start..matter.
Sometimes a handload can have a bullet seated out more if a too generous gap exists before rifling by loading one round into the chamber and no magazine used....but if headspace has bullet standing with no support...we be wobblin.

The.17 is a real good flat shooting varmit gun. As long as wind not blowing hard, and with a decent scope, 250 yard shots are possible

I hear Klein's Sporting Goods in Chicago has a really good deal on Mannlicher-Carcano 6.5mm Bolt Action ($19.95 with scope)!

Limitool,

I think I just saw in an advertisement I got in the mail where Cabellas has that in the Savage package with a hard case and scope on sale. You might want to check it out if one is near you.

The FFL will do the background check when you go to pick it up. Here in Florida, its a phone call to the local po-po to make sure you're not a felon.

$40 is pretty steep for an FFL fee. You should be able to find an FFL who will do it for $20.

Thanks buddy.... I'll check it out.

I'm not just wanting a everyday "factory" .17 rifle. I'm looking for "professional" .17 target rifle set-up. I'd like the head space to be the bare minimum, thumb stock, bi-pod insert, other barrel upgrades and many / certain other upgrades. I know this well cost a lot more but that's what I'd like / want / will have.

I realize a rimfire rifle can only be upgraded to a certain point (not counting ammo) but I am wanting a totally professionally target rifle in the .17 range.

I'm now contacting several dealers / gunsmiths and inquiring. I'm in no hurry at all.

The scope options now REALLY have my attention.

The reason for my interest in this low caliber weapon is because of my past and a new challenge now. I shot archery at a pro level years past. (For those who appreciate / know) ... When Easton came out with the XX-75 25-12 arrows for high poundage hunting bows that got my attention instantly. These arrows were huge in diameter. IF... only if.... someone involved in target archery could fire these arrow successfully / repeatably in a world class setting the bulls-eye would then be "larger".

Long story short.... that thinking worked out great after you "learned" how to set them up on LOW POUNDAGE SETUPS (NOT EASY WITH THEIR STIFF SPINE WT.!). During the 93' Vegas open Target Championships (Professional Freestyle Division - in Las Vegas) several of us at the finals (top 50 finalist) had the same idea.

The next year the new "Vegas Target" appeared. And "inside / outs" new rule arrived for tie-breakers.

I realize 95% of folks reading this don't know or understand what I just said above.... if you do (good)?.... I now want to move to this low caliber rifle setup and play...!

On the 4473 form your SS no. is optional. I always leave it blank, because I don't want to give Big Brother any more information than required by law.

It is optional...I include it as it can speed up the process and exclude false positives with common names such as mine. (John Smith, Mark Smith, etc etc)

They already know your SS, they gave it to you....

Scopes will drive you crazy with options. A mil dot calibrated to caliber would be sweet though harder to dot an i with.
Those scopes that come with most gun "combo's" seldom boast of high quality.
Then too ,ultimate high quality glass can equal your rifle's cost too...or more.
Lapping rings that are properly secured by their bases prior to mounting a scope goes far towards accuracy.
