Procedure into ordering a rifle online...?

Scopes will drive you crazy with options. A mil dot calibrated to caliber would be sweet though harder to dot an i with.
Those scopes that come with most gun "combo's" seldom boast of high quality.
Then too ,ultimate high quality glass can equal your rifle's cost too...or more.
Lapping rings that are properly secured by their bases prior to mounting a scope goes far towards accuracy.

Your right..... It would be EASY to spend more on the scope than the rifle itself! But I did that already about 7 years ago. I bought a new Ruger .22 and spent double on the scope than the rifle.. :occasion14:

It is optional...I include it as it can speed up the process and exclude false positives with common names such as mine. (John Smith, Mark Smith, etc etc)

Speed up the process? How? It still takes five minutes to fill out the form. The 4473 then goes on file. It has nothing to do with the background check.

The only process it speeds up is when Big Brother comes to take your guns away.

I'm not just wanting a everyday "factory" .17 rifle. I'm looking for "professional" .17 target rifle set-up. I'd like the head space to be the bare minimum, thumb stock, bi-pod insert, other barrel upgrades and many / certain other upgrades. I know this well cost a lot more but that's what I'd like / want / will have.

I realize a rimfire rifle can only be upgraded to a certain point (not counting ammo) but I am wanting a totally professionally target rifle in the .17 range.

You would probably be WAY ahead then if you contact a gunsmith and have them order just the action and put in a match barrel (minimal chamber dimensions, match throating, properly crowned muzzle, etc). The factory chamber would be too large for a custom job unless they hack off the breech and shorten the barrel. Let them order just the parts they need and you put a down-payment in to allow them to get started. The 'smith will just toss the barrel and stock from an "off the rack" rifle if you're looking for a "professional" grade.

Why spend the $ on the parts you won't need?

Tough to make a living at shooting rimfire I would imagine.

I used to bench .222 Rem at a local club. Endless tweeking and development to get that one-hole group. I still do a lot of archey/bowhunting, but I'm using bows from the 1960's and Douglas fir arrows that I hand taper from 11/32" to 5/16". I'm building my skills and not buying them with techno gadgets and gear. ;-)

Shooting stumps is a LOT more fun than indoor 20 yard. After all, targets are only practice for the real hunting situations. :icon_thumleft:

I really have no idea what your government paranoia has to do with this topic. Become a Charter member if you want to discuss politics and your fear of big brother.

My neighbor and I have both had to wait an extra 3-4 days...in Colorado....an immediate issue state....when both of our names and DOB matched felons in other states. All of our gun buddies had quite a laugh over it.

Those guys will always will be felons...and our names and DOB will always match.

We were advised by the FFL and by the CBI (Colorado Bureau of Investigation) that by filling out the SSN next time it would avoid this....which is has done in 3 subsequent purchases. I now receive my firearm within 1-2 hours....even though it STILL shows a match...and always will.

Hundreds of similar stories in gun forums across the internet. As stated...it is optional.

Hey Charlie.... I bet your having a blast doing and using the retro 60's gear. Good for you. And if your only into the hunting aspect of using archery equipment then your right it's more fun than indoor target archery. I did both and the "stump" shooting was a lot more fun for me also. But shooting perfect FITA rounds was much more mentally challenging and harder to do and I really enjoyed the highest level of competition in that arena. After that.... switching to the hunting aspect of archery shooting wasn't much of a change outside of the environment (which was much better).

I went to 2 gun shops yesterday and inquired into exactly what you posted above. I learned a lot. And I have to do a lot more research yet also.

I'm not looking to make a "living" what-so-ever with a rimfire. I'm interested only in a new challenge personally and don't intend to compete at all. Maybe have some fun shooting with my son and some friends. I retired in 06' @ age 49 and only do what I feel like doing now. And I agree with you on honing your skills and not relying on techno gadgets and gear. Both are WAY over rated and most only help the high end shooters. I used to sell a lot of equipment to beginners and mid-level shooters who demanded/wanted to have what I had. Then they'd "wonder" why they couldn't get the same results. I also learned a lot from them during these times.

Thank you for the post Charlie and later today I'm going to get hold of several manufacturers and inquire on their high end parts. I'm done with the idea of making an internet purchase.

Later, Brad

They all must be potheads in Colorado. It only took me 15 minutes to walk into a gun store here in Florida, fill out the 4473 (leaving SS no. blank), the dealer made one phone call to the police, and I walked out with a brand new AR-15.

The less information you give Big Brother, the better.

It is stated on numerous guns forums...and Reddit...and 1000 other places on the internet...if you add your SSN it "can" in many cases expedite the process.

I'm thrilled that people from Florida can have access to their right so quickly. It is not the case for me in Colorado, a gun friendly state. With my previous hold up, I prefer to add it.

Yet again, not sure what your fear of big brother or your prejudice of Colorado marijuana smokers has to do with anything. If fear is how you make your decisions, do your thing. It is optional to add you SSN...seems simple enough.

In Florida if you have your conceal carry permit it is easy to buy a gun and leave with no hassle and no waiting....

I don't fear anyone. If you trust the government, good for you. I don't.

Well here's the easy way. I bought my last 5 guns at Quartzsite AZ in January. The town turns into the worlds largest flea market. You can buy just about any gun you want there. It's cash and carry with no paperwork. I picked up a beauty last time I was there. A .22-250 Marlin with a 3x9 scope for $400. It looks like brand new in the box with the iron sites and papers. Just missed a German SS Luger. It was black. Never saw one before. There is a guy there that restores old guns. He had everything from muskets to the old levers in .44-40. Great place to visit in January. Frank

Hay Gollum, it's just over the line!:):):)

By far the easiest way if allowed. Colorado used to be that way until a couple years ago. Any gun show in town....show cash and walk off. Now even private party transactions must have paperwork and background checks.

Kansas next door is that way still...and I'm only about 3 hours from a pretty big show there. Bought my wife a .38 and myself a .223 Saiga....and we were just supposed to go to browse and for the drive. :)

Hey fellow T-net members...

I'm sorry I started a conversation that it's now lead into. That was not my intention at all folks.

I was only inquiring (at the beginning) into how to order a rifle online... Period.

I didn't explain (at the time) I wanted a "special" rifle and/or why I wanted it and/or my background into my weapons expertise usage background past. This was not about a background info check at all. Chill on that topic please or start your own.... please.

I only wanted to inquire what was standard procedure for an internet purchase.

But, on the flip side I was hoping to engage into a LOT of info into building a state-of-the-art-.17 rimfire rifle. I still do.... So if any folks are highly knowledgeable in this arena ... PLEASE ENGAGE!!!!

FYI: I just put a bid down on a Anchutz .17 HMR 1727F. It's an great rifle and one of the best. And I'm looking at a Leupoid VX-3 scope to top it off using Talley rings and bases.... anybody have any experience what so ever in this arena...? Or an opinion...

I know I can get another .17 for a lot less but I'm torn. I probably ought to get the "lesser" rifle and upgrade my MD A LOT!!!!!

Have you look at the .17 wsm? Pretty impressive.

You really didn't say what use the gun will serve and why .17. You can't reload rimfires! There is limited usages for that caliber.
I have had many calibers and have been a FFD in the past. I have several .22's including a Calico .22 that looks like a small AR15 but has a 100 round magazine, a bull barrel Ruger MarkIII,and several others. My favorite is my .22-250 Marlin which moves at 4K FPS. If you shoot an empty coke can, the bullet is so fast, the can doesn't move. There is no dent, just a near round hold that is thickened on the edges. A friend brought over some ballistic armor scrap that was left over from plating the latest HumV. At 75 yds 0ne of 3 shots completely penetrated it. I guess there are variations on the inexpensive ammo I was using. I have a 3x9 scope on it and at 100 yds, I never miss a can. Frank

I guess I want a new challenge and I'd like to use the rifle for long range target shooting for the most part. But going squirrel hunting (small greys here) would be fun with a good long range scope. I too have some real good .22's and really enjoy them. I'm aiming to get a very good .17 rifle so that my skills can catch up with the rifle. I have a great target archery background and many of the mental and physical skills will come back into play.

I just received 2000 rounds of .17 Hornady V-max ammo last week. Now I'm just searching for a good .17 rifle and scope set-up. So Frankn it's just a new "toy" and something to play with. I realize it doesn't hit hard at long range but I'm not looking to put down large game. Just for play!!!! I'm getting a good bipod and spotting scope also. Thanks.... Brad

Swwweeeet! Biathlon rifle. If it misses with that barrel, bedding and lock time it's not the rifle's fault. Odd Lee/Schmidt-Rubin style straight pull bolt but it should be a honey for certain. That's a rifle for offhand shooting but no reason it won't bench.

Can't go wrong with a high-end Leupold, either. I've been happy with Nikons (slightly less $) lately but I have a 30 year old Leupold EER on a Contender pistol and it just keeps soldiering on. I see to replace it I'd have to tear up four Benjamins.

Thanks Charlie.... I'm not in the habit of tearing up Benjamins either. But I'd really like to get a state-of-the-art rifle and have some fun. I'm not certain I'll get this "biathlon" style machined rifle yet but it's so hard to resist. But... the money involved does/should make anybody take notice. I know I could take the money and get a lesser rifle (have fun) and still get upgrade a MD (a lot)... I'm kind of torn...?

For me personally.... I absolutely love the challenge of hitting a bulls-eye (any distance) and then repeating the feat. I guess that comes from the target archery demands of perfect scores including IO's to the end. It's all about the challenge of breathing, controlling heart rate, squeezing and following through. But what most folks do when they miss is try to figure out "what happened". Some of the best shots I EVER TOOK.... were the one's I NEVER TOOK! Letting down the archery shot and/or not pulling the trigger is what I mean.

hunting squirrels with deer slugs is what takes skill

Nothing like hitting what your aiming for, at any range.
Perfection in action....and it's not made in China!
