Gt a box today.... Complete skunk. However I found a 72 and a 79 proof halves. Do you guys like to find proofs? Or do you just put them back in the roll and move on

I'm the same. The only value is in silver proofs, since damaged/tarnished proofs aren't valuable. I am just building a set of 1971+ clads for my own fun.

I put them in a folder and throw back multiples of dates

I ordered a Whitman no date half album from my lcs to put my clad proof half set together. I have about 20 different dates so far.
I would love to put a set of silver proofs together also. So far I have (2) 1968 & 1976.

I've found hundreds of proofs in boxes over the years, most of them impaired - scratched, worn, finger printed, etc. I did manage to find about 20-30 pristine proofs in CWRs the other day and sold them for an okay profit in ebay. They looked like they came straight out of a Dansco album. Impaired proofs are tough to sell tho, so I usually throw them back.

I keep only the "cameo" proofs prior to 2002. I only keep 1 per year & will only upgrade what I currently have. All others "cameos" I throw back. I also keep 1 of any NIFCs (1987 & 2002 & later). Of course I also keep any silver along with any clad commemorative that I find.

Stupid question I know of course never clean coins. But is there anyway I could get some blotchy dots of gunk off of a 72 proof half without damaging it further... I mean its already in circulated condition and I just want it to looks nice. Isn't there the acetone method for silver coins or something? Sorry still new to coins

I love proof halves, I keep them all, as long as they aren't terribly beaten/scratched up.

Try a soap solution of DAWN LIQUID SOAP in a Rx bottle with hot water overnite for two days, stir occasionally, hot water rinse & paper towel tap dry. Hay, if DAWN worked on the Valdez oil spill (1989 ?) on ocean wildlife, should also work on metal. That's what I use to clean the oily film on coins of mine.
