The first looks like broken crockery or water pipe and the rest spalls or broken bits of iron - possibly the rest of the sewer pipe.

Like this . . .

Thanks for responding. I have never heard of clay water piping. I never give up a source, but for this thread I will tell all that these objects were found in Butter Milk falls. those pictures were taken on a carpet floor.

Still in use in a lot of homes and municipalities. Clay water and sewer lines. Along with the inflow and infiltration associated with cracked piping. And frequently not too far apart. Ewwwww.

The round item looks like a plumber's gasket at a pipe joint. Oakum was pounded in and lead/tin was melted over it to form a seal.

PS - I am business manager for a sewage/wastewater treatment plant so I have some inside insights when it comes to waste management - fascinating stuff we all take for granted.

Interesting, thanks for the reply. The only thing that doesn't make any sense is that it was found under a rail road and next to a creek. would something like that be there?

NY is prone to flooding and pipes and cisterns get overwhelmed and washed away with heavy water events. It's also handy to dump "clean fill" off sidings and down creek and river banks to get rid of it and replace eroded sections. No one sleeps in my pasture but occasionally I find a discarded mattress beside the road along side it.

Clay pipe was heavily used from the 1930's to the 1950's when a lot of NY was last upgraded.

Its pipe, either sewer or water. We use to dig that up all the time in the house I grew up in,a mid 1700s colonial.

Thanks for the info. I feel really stupid right now. Sitting in waste is not something I would do. I pulled a lot of rock like things out of there and all objects pinged in the 70 to 90 which on the Garrett GTI 2500 shows them to be silver in composition. All research on Butter Milk Falls said most native American's settled there and it was a historic site. I feel like a stupid fool. Sorry to everyone who looked at this thread.

It's probably still there. Most sites weren't sealed after the historic era. You have to separate out the modern stuff to get to the good stuff.

Keep plugging away. It's there - under 200+ years of modern trash (and some good coins dropped in between!)

And detecting near railroads is TOUGH. TONS and TONS of old iron, slag, rusty spalls off old boilers, stakes, plates, etc., etc. Step back 25 feet away from the tracks and keep searching.

Some older drainages were clay pipe also. I lay watwr and sewer lines. Ive never seen clay water lines but have seen many clay sewer lines. Whose to say someone working on the tracks didnt toss it there from a home repair snd had it on there truck.
