Though I chuckle at their charming (?) humor, unlike some others here I don't think you were silly to rent the backhoe and go at it. You didn't give the guy any money, you didn't let him dig your land, so you protected yourself from him! While it would've been money-wise & time-saving to thoroughly research his info BEFORE renting the backhoe, there's probably no one who's been part of this forum for a while who hasn't spent HOURS OR DAYS detecting & digging & cussing at an empty lot or field, finding only junk, junk, junk, only to discover LATER the info that that area was used only as an auto-dismantling yard, or some such. Been there, done that. I hope you don't give up on this forum due to mockery and I'll bet your too confident for that! WHAT I DO WANT TO KNOW IS HOW YOU CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THERE WAS NO GOLD IN THE PILES OF DIRT YOU DUG UP WITH THE BACKHOE?? As a detectorist, I'm familiar only with the sound of refined gold in jewelry. People on the Prospecting Forum can tell you their methods of finding gold flakes, grains, small nuggets, etc. Gold isn't as easy to find with detector as other metals. HAVE FUN! Andi
