A man came to my house about a year ago. Had a computer and a few other gadgets. Said he found some gold on my land using a satellite and his computer. He wanted to dig. I declined. He told me where it was, so a few months ago I hired a back hole and dug and dug and dug,,,nothing at all. My question have any of you heard of using a satellite and computer to find gold and silver ?

It's called dowsing and there are dorks on this very website that believe they can do this.

Dowsing

lol

sounds to me like the guy was researching some lost gold or treasure. Don't know of any way to use a computer from a distance to locate gold, except if you google fort knox. There may be something to this story based on old tales. I would search the net for the info /story that brought him there. There could be something to it. Good luck. Sometimes the journey is more fun than the destination.

Marlow brothers homestead is just south of there 1/4 mile,,from what other locals said the same guy had found a few old silver coins using the same method,,,anyway it's been fun

some old treasure tales have a story that says 1.5 miles or so from town a miner buried his gold by a huge oak 100 paces south of a railroad track and went into town only to be killed by someone in a drunken bar fight. satellite images can detect 1.5 miles and south of old railroad tracks. but is something there ? only god knows for now.

As a "wannabe" cowboy, living on the Chisom trail is reason enough to dig. use a metal detector and maybe a screen to thourghly sift the ground. Arrowheads, gemstones and such, do not ring on the detector. do you know the history of your land? past owners ,campsites, indian occupation? There may be records at your courthouse and or newspaper. keep us posted. I hope you find something.

Found lots of arrow heads, not sure of any Indian campgrounds, 1861 silver dollar in great condition, wheat pennies Indian head nickels

Yes Katy , There is a Santa Clause ! Let it not be said that I ever discouraged anybody from the thrill of the hunt !!! My bit earlier ,
was simply a reference to all the scams out there . Do some research , get the appropriate tools and have some fun !!!

1861 silver dollar (Seated Liberty) is a rare find indeed ! We see next to none of those found and posted on this site ! ,
Could you please post a picture of that bad girl ??? Pretty Please ?????????????????

I will get a picture to you :)

Katy you should have just rented a metal detector. Cleaner and cheaper then a backhoe and who knows what else you may have found. Sounds like your place is prime for good targets!

I have a metal detector,,,it wasn't picking anything up in that location ,,he said it was deeper than what mine goes,,,yes it's been fun digging in the ground finding what the past has left for us

If you're having fun... enjoy the ride.

For what it's worth, I believe that computers and satellites can be used to discover quite a few things - such as geologic composition, long-defunct riverbeds, ghost town foundations - that could indicate more likely areas to detect in. If he asked for no money and told you the place, he might have been reasonably legit in his own treasure hunting endeavors.

If there's a metal detector shop nearby, maybe they rent some high end equipment that can go really deep?

Don't let 'em razz ya, btw. Enjoy!

Hey ,that's a good one, I think ill carry my laptop around when I speak with land owners and just adlib it from there.

I hate to get involved in these things, but there are long range mineral detection tekniques in use today, from airplanes, and yes satelites.

This is just one.
How did the military survey Afghan's mineral deposits from airplanes? - geology science technology | Ask MetaFilter

How well it may work, I have no idea, however no so long ago who would have thought you could find a sunken ship a mile below the surface of the ocean with a piece of electronics.

All that said I still think the guy you met was up to something or he would have showed you a geological survey, mining company card or similar.

Over the years I have found that men with little detectors are the most rude,,,

OUCH! Someone please pull the knife outta my back.
Sorry, I must have offended you, I was just having fun.

yep, but who told her my detector is smallish?
