Ran Into My First CRH Shmuck Today...

Hello All,

Well, it was bound to happen and today it did -- I ran into my first CRH Shmuck! You know, the ones that give all of us coin hunters a bad name. Here's the story: I went to my usual dump bank to put $1000 into the machine but this time I went in a day early because I had to get some money in my mortgage account. When I walk in I see some guy who is dressed like a redneck with a half filled coin machine bag of halves in one hand and he is watching one of the teller's remove the half bag off of the machine. She turns around and says "oh, wow, this is the guy I was telling you about who always fills up the bags." The guy seemed surprised that I throw all my dumps in this machine and asked if I looked for silver halves and I said yes. The schmuck them proceeds to dump his bag of halves into the machine, gets his money and buys the partial bag off of the machine. I walked over to him and said if you wait a few minutes we can chat a little - he says "sure, I'll wait outside." When he went outside I told the teller who always changes the bags for me that I would talk to him and it wasn't kosher what he was doing - she thanked me profusely and she said "he has done this before and it is kind of annoying."

I cash in my halves and find the guy waiting for me outside. I hammered CRHing etiquette to him (i.e. - don't s*it where you eat) but he didn't seem to bright and said "they let me do it the last few times I tried so it shouldn't be a problem." He then told me one bank that already cut him off from buying the bags but again it didn't seem like he could put 2 and 2 together. I explained that he will eventually be cut off from all banks if he keeps doing it. Long story short, the guy doesn't know what he is doing and is giving us CRHers in WNY a bad name as he has a big territory of where he buys bags.

so he used his dump money to buy the bag? I hope he gets all of your dumps! The guy is obviously a huge d-bag.

People just don't realize that the more attention we call to ourselves, the harder our hobby will become. I mean I know am a novice as I have only been doing this for a few months, but it's like fishing. If you have a great fishing hole, and overfish it and don't find a balance, the hole will eventually run dry.

There's definitely people like this on Long Island, because most banks won't order me halves unless I swear not to dump them back in their machines. Luckily I have developed a GREAT rapport with 2 TD Banks where they say I can dump to my heart's content and actually save silver for me from the machine bc I bring them donuts

It also doesn't hurt that I was honest with one of the tellers when he tried to sell me a $50 gold eagle for $200 two weeks ago and told him what it was really worth and said that I couldn't pay $200 because I have a conscience lol.

Could I have made a quick $1200? Of course, but if he ever found out I would be shunned from my best dump bank.

Heed these words, and remember the moral of this post.... DONT BE A D-BAG TO THE TELLERS!

Amen, that is what I was trying to say last week. Some of the tellers have been telling me 2 or 3 guys do the same thing in my area. I have been asking the tellers to tell them to dump at a different bank. First because they will mess it for the rest of us. Second if the dump a different bank I will not see their coin for a while.

Last year I watched a guy and his wife carry in 3 x 5 gallon buckets of halves and i saw at least 2 more in their car. Im guessing I could put at least $2,500 in a bucket and i quite sure even the biggest machines with double boxes dont hold much more than that if its empty.

I also watched a guy with a half filled 5 gallon bucket of pennies , yes pennies that take hours, not only dump those in the machine but had the audacity to look for wheats while he was dumping them. I kid you not i waited in line 30 minutes before i realized what was going on and he had not gotten $20 in the machine in 30 minutes. At this point there was 2 people in front of me and 5 people behind me and the guy was still putting pennies down the machine 5 or 6 at a time. Anyway long story short i payed a kid 5 dollars to throw his slurpy in the "orange home depot garbage can" beside the coin machine. If whoever that happened to is reading this...........be considerate of others..... and Ill save $5 dollars.

anyone on 1 or 2 are cool. once someone is on 3...they stay there forever. Sound like you found a number 3....so F that guy LOL

It does make it tough to do business. Stopped by a CU the other day that I had never been to but heard had a coin counting machine, (banks with coin counters are extremely hard to find in my area). I proceed to ask if they have any halves at all and if they would be willing to sell the bag off the machine to me. The teller responded that they will no longer sell bags off of the machine because someone would come in and by the bags, search them at the branch, then dump them back into the machine

Fools like these make it tough for the rest of us.

I don't have coin counters in my area but yeah, building rapport with tellers or more importantly the ones that order for you are key. This guy screwed it up for himself. Let him evolve himself out of the hobby of CRH. If these guys screw it up for themselves, let him do it. He won't last too much longer.

$$, good going on at least making him aware of what he is doing and many are not ok with it. May some good CRH karma come your way. Not that its going to stop him but at least you tried. About 90% of the people in this country have no common sense. Why we are now a nation of welfare and handouts.

These people are everywhere and think they are going to strike it rich. There is no mystery to them, only money and they don't care about how they are going about things or how it will impact their future success. They are little people trying to be big. When they are stupid on top of it all they can be extremely dangerous to those around them. We all knew it would come to this as silver went higher, but as long as there are halves there will be good coins somewhere.

My favorite teller just told me I bought $250 from buy/sell idiot. I pretty much have to buy them if I want to continue to get my coins.

I asked her if he has a regular day and I will have talk with him.

something that bothers me in a few threads lately is the fact that people are looking to "educate" other CRHers about etiquette, which seems cool...except you are asking tellers if the guy is a regular, whats his schedule...and basically stalking them to get the opportunity to "educate".

While I don't expect one of you to ever approach me, because I completely dig and follow the rules...but just saying, when dumping, I am prepared for self-defense, and a stranger approaching me when I walk out of the bank with $$$ might not get the best end to their attempt at education. And I wonder how many others similar in mind set. I get paranoid when carrying large sums of money.

Do we really want to stalk other CRHers and educate them? Do we really want to convince tellers to make those people go to another bank, but what if they know tellers too? Tempers may flare.

Yes these people are complete douches. Yes they are ruining it for us. I get it.
But is it worth the risk, or is it that people just don't think there is a risk of violent reactions?
I think there is a risk and I would never take that risk.
