Here's a mood changer. My wife just passed away 2 weeks ago on the 5th. of January. Found out she had a mass on her liver in August. Doctors told us in November that there was nothing they could do but make her comfortable. I have been at home taking care of her since then (and before). That's why I haven't been active lately. We were together almost 20 years and neither of us drank. She was my rock. She was my best friend. Just got back from Ga., was visiting family. Sitting alone in an empty house calling your wife's name when you know she won't answer is heartbreaking. I am lost right now.

I am very sorry for your loss and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

Hey Mr. ,that's my saddle blanket. Hencho in Mexico. Won it at a shoot....
And a hatchet type head I paid a quarter ,or fifty cents for years ago.
No notch for nail prying , but it had a poll , now well mushroomed.
It throws pretty good. Traveled a lot of miles on my belt.

If you want to guess , have at it! I never found it's origins.
Just showing an edged piece more suitable for batoning than the spine of a knife. Though within reason so not to maul the eye shape.

Probably a farm or homestead type origin ,as far as use.

Longer story than you will like probably....
The hows of getting into blackpowder arms and living history are another.

Anyways.
I was in "need" of a tomahawk , and also in need of funds to allow a decent one. (I had nearly irreparably broke the bank buying an eighty dollar rifle kit to build.)
So , at a flea market I spotted it an old head in a pile of old tools , held it up and asked the vendor what he had to have for it. He said what will you give me?

It has a small eye and I had some dry maple saplings.
Whittled a skinny 18 inch handle for it and used it as required for knife and hawk targets at rendezvous type shoots. It worked!
Handle needed a couple inches cut off (from knuckles on closed fist to your elbow is about right for length) but balance and that skinny grip just did not get it.
A small hammer handle acquired with who knows what or why , and lacking purpose was cut down and carved to fit.

Of course all of this ignores a hawk having a tapered eye to keep the head tight.....And allows better dimension/diameter of a handle.
Eventually I somehow saved enough ducats to buy a hand forged hawk.
The lil one was not forgotten though and went hunting often.
Visitors of small frame learned to throw with it. Kept a round of wood hanging in the front yard for just such a purpose.
Kids at shoots too.

Ya know relevant I would like to see a close up... this may be an older hand forged piece that has been wire brushed... it could have even been a "found" piece that was really rusted then cleabed etc.

By no means do I write that axe off as a repo.

The handle I knew was modern and just figured it was together when you acquired it... but now this changes things.

L.o.l..Me taking pictures is about as common as Christmas. That old pic has been on the laptop quite a while.
It's a hand forged piece. Not cast.
It has inclusions of impurities in it too.

I have not tried to tell if it has a piece of hard steel forge welded at the bit. Plow share steel or similar , but don't think it does.
Holds a good edge ,so I'm happy. Devalued it by putting an edge on and erasing patina , but it was acquired to use.

It's an oldie. Kind of a generic "cabin" profile. Resisted the urge to shave/cut the top front profile off to make it more of a tomahawk looking head . But that is something that it is not. And due to it's age, will leave it as is.
Have a old (not that old) roofing type I can cut if modifying something becomes overwhelmingly "needed" . And it's not.
