Fixing a Big Wheel's WHEEL...!

Shay.jpg

Looks like they are fixing a Big Wheel (on its side),
while the other half rests against a tree. The Big Wheels help
drag huge logs to the awaiting steam donkey and boom - that will
load the flat cars. It took the mules and/or draft horses to bring
them as far as this Shay engine - which climbs much steeper grades,
than standard steam locomotives. And, any steeper country than
you see, they would then resort to cable skidding (scary stuff, believe me!)
Big Wheels saved the quality of the wood - less waste.

in an "Ice Cave", but BULLETS too..?!

PICT5283.JPG
Here I'm in an "ice cave", shown on old maps.
That day, I found my Henry .22 short cartridge that was dropped
near the entrance - which is a reliable water source for
critters. Has been known for near 100yrs, and is not
too far from a wagon road.

Can't you imagine the chaos, if that tightly-packed group experienced even six inches of sudden movement
in that wagon...?! =\

Yeah a horse that is spooked or in a bad mood could result in some real fun.
