Found this in Southeast Virginia. I believe it to be a 1775 era SC loyalist Dragoon button? based on the limited info online but would love confirmation
I also concur this is a Loyalist button. Americans who volunteers to fight alongside the British regulars during the war. A lot of them at the conclusion of the war in 1783 fled to Canada. The war in the south was pretty much a terrorist campaign, it was very, very nasty. If the button is made of brass, it is a giveaway to the Loyalist use. The American buttons are almost always made of pewter, except for a few officers' buttons made in France.
Wow once again amazed at the knowledge on this site. Button id and history lesson all in one. I did not know that the Tories fled to Canada after the war!!!!!.
Here's the only published material Glenn, safe to say it's a loyalist button and a killer find. Whether it's dragoons or SC offiliated is anyones guess.

Actually it's not safe to say, as that is just speculation in the book... and you can ask him and you won't get a definitive answer. There's very similar ones dug in the UK and no one has ever compared those to the ones found in SC, so it can't be said if they are two different things that look very much alike, or they originate from Great Britain and many just happen to go to SC. There's some that have a long stem that look like like a tack, which I assume is horse related, and is just another thing thrown in the mix. I doubt we'll ever know the truth.
