Found this at old home site that was on map in 1875 but gone after 1900.newest coin found there was 189x v nickel. This coin only reads 12-40 on E-trac, 1 1/2 inches dia. weighs 21.2 grams (should be 27 grams ?) came out of ground like this only rinsed with water. Thanks in advance. Welcome to Treasure Net. I don't have much knowledge on coins, but it looks counterfeit to me. That said, you will very shortly get more help and we might find that I'm wrong. Right or wrong, it's a great find.

What does the lettering say? I can't read it due to the small screen on my device!

burlybob,
Welcome to Treasure Net !
The coin (if it is one) was minted in Zacatecas. Many varieties exist of the "Zs" 8-reales draped bust type coin, including at least 5 varieties of the 1818 (but each of those five had the same collector's value as of several years ago). If the coin were a 'regular issue', it would (as you said) weigh 27 grams (and be 40 mm in diameter). Others here, above my pay grade, can be more specific.

skeeterd,
On a regular issue, the lettering (legend) is: FERDIN VII DEI GRATIA 1818/ PLUS VLTRA/HISPAN ET IND REX Z 8R (then the assayer's initials--either AG, H or HI--and maybe other initials in other varieties of the same year.

Welcome to Treasure Net  I think you have already answered the question when you posted the weight, 21.2g as oposed to 27g, and it looks to be plated. But a nice find none the less.

Thanks guys for all the responses.Have been digging for 30 + years and kind of figured from the #'s on the E-trac and the color it was fake when I dug it. Guess it's back to looking for my first real Reale. Thanks again BURLYBOB

Looks like fake but from that period...

burlybob,

Neat find just the same.....but generally a dug coin of that era the high points would be silver color and the devises dark....so does appear plated as others have suggested....still a keeper to my mind though.

I happen to have dug 8 reale of the same year which I'm posting up for comparison.

Regards + HH

Bill

I wouldn't call this a "fake," but rather a "Counterfeit." And it is an OLD counterfeit, which is great news. No reason to modern fake a coin like this. I'm sure this was made in the 1820s or 30s. Many of the 8 Reales that are dug are counterfeits. Hill Billy in Kentucky has dug FOUR counterfeit 8's. As the largest denomination silver in circulation, it was counterfeited quite often. Very cool find--even more cool than a real one in my opinion, and great that it has a lot of detail to it still. Congrats, Buck

'Contemporary Counterfeit' is the most correct, but fake is not far of the right word, because in it's time it was a fake or non-legal tender.

As SS first said, still a great find & although normally not as well collected/appreciated (in terms of value), it is much rarer than the real deal.

Yep, looks like a white metal silver plated contemporary counterfeit. I would be just as happy to find one of these as a genuine 8 reale.

I wouldn't, as I have a fake & no really one, but I know your situation:occasion14:
