Thursday the 5th, I decided to go out on my own to a local park to detect areas that my dad refuses to detect - tot lots as he does not care to find clad (just wants to find old coins).
Anyway I found only 17 cents there, countless firecracker (M-80) left overs and other trash -- I spent enough time to fill my plastic grocery bags twice as there was so much trash.
The real kicker was I found a razor utility knife sitting on the kid's backhoe digger toy in the sandbox -- right on the seat. I carefully examined it, and it was full of sand and nothing stands out about it, so I didn't bother calling anyone about it - I figured a park worker must have dropped it.
I went to another area of the park and ended up finding a total of 4 dimes, 1 nickle, 4 pennies, and 5 pull tabs.
Saturday the 7th, I decided to go hunting alone again - earily mornings as always. I went to a park that is always over run by people, but with the over 100 degree temps no worry about many people. Turns out I only seen three people for the 3 and 1/2 hours I was there.
Coinage wise it was my worst trip ever - I only found one single zincoln. I found some pull tabs, screw caps, and my first ever bottle cap.
One guy asked me while I was there what I found, I showed him my penny and he said I was sweating too much for a single penny. At that point I thought he was going to give me some of his pocket change.
He didn't - but we had a laugh, and in the end he did better than me as he was collecting aluminum cans and found several.
Sunday the 8th, me and my dad went to another local school, which dates back to the oldest Sanborn maps I have of my area - 1886. The trip was cut really short due to a sudden thunderstorm. The storm hit fast and we had to run to the truck with our towels wrapped on the detector controls. We were glad to see the heavy rain though as it has been so dry here, ended with a about 1/2" of rain total for the day.
I did manage to add two wheat pennies to my finds.
They were both beside a crosswalk area. In all we didn't manage to cover much area before the rain so it is hard to say what is still on the grounds.
Some interesting finds were a screw head at 2" deep, and the head to a old safety pin about the same depth. I also found a metal cover, but it didn't go to anything. The other find was a trumpet (or some other music instrument) valve - which makes since as it was near the music building.
Find totals was 1 quarter, 1 dime, 1 nickel, 2 wheaties, 4 other pennies, and two tabs.
My newest hunt was from today, Tuesday the 10th. As I have two MD's and my niece seemed interested in the hobby I took her to the backyard and let her use my Tracker IV and showed her how to dig and what sounds to listen for.
She found three pennies and a hot wheels car - she was happy with that until she saw my final total. She lost interest though after about 20 minutes, complaining about the heat, and said the 2.6 pound MD was too heavy. Oh well it isn't for everyone I guess.
I continued on anyway with my Discovery 3300 with my 4" Gold Nugget coil due to the trash, as I was when she was outside. Well it turned out to be a wise decision as it was my largest amount of coins ever found in a single hunt - I found 41 different coins.
In the backyard I found the quarter, nickle, and a few pennies. I decided to do the strip of grass beside the driveway, but figured I'd check the gravel driveway itself for a few minutes.
In total I found 1 quarter, 1 nickle, 2 dimes, 37 pennies, and 7 pull tabs. Most were from the gravel driveway near the old car turnaround area. One neat find was a old car tire valve screw on cover that is solid metal (not like the plastic ones today) and has some rubber inside on the top - in the picture above the quarter and pencil eraser end.
I used my dagger/boot knife to dig in the gravel, it wasn't hard really - but my hand and wrist sure hurts now. I think I may have to skip long gravel detecting, or at least break it into several smaller hunts.
So far I have learned a great deal about the Discovery 3300 and will post a review once I get a few more hunts with it. I will say though I am more than happy with the 3300 and see no reason to upgrade to another MD.
The only thing I wouldn't mind is getting the Fisher F4 11" DD w/push-on style connector coil for the 3300 - as it is said to do so great it would be a awesome coil to add to mine.
