Hey guys. Was able to get back to some more detecting trips lately (three hunts in particular). Two of them were at two different school sites, one of which produced the 41 merc and the 46 rosie.

Merc still attacthed to the original clump of dirt from the hole (lol, bad pic i know...cell phone camera ::):

Those hunts were a NICE break from battling all the dense brush and prickers and such from places like the Iceberg, which was the most recent hunt me and Mirage did. I lucked out in a small area I haven't really tried before and found two 41 quarters and a 17 merc. The beat-up green marble was right there in the hole with the merc. The other find I thought was pretty sweet was this old-looking, cameo-like ring. That thing was pretty deep, I was about to give up on it. The face on it looks kinda Victorian I guess, but the ring looks like it might be silver plated (and there are no markings on it). So yea, still some nice finds despite us all pounding the place...yea, it felt good to get the those silver quarters. 8)

Oh. lol, actually, the only thing on that tag is: "7th: Thou shalt not steal." Presumably from a set. Thanks MM

lol, Jill, my uncle was talking about that thing and he said it was worn on someone with the rank of a first seargent or something. I think it's like a general service type of thing, but there's a bunch of variations of it. It's upsidedown in the pic actually.

Thanks for the comments all!

It is the rank of Staff sergeant in the Army...In the marine corps it looks the same however it has crossed rifles in it. Nice finds...It appears the ring has the face of a man and a woman?

I don't see two faces. :P Somebodies gonna have to 'paint' me a picture! :D That ring is my favorite of all those super finds!

GREAT post with fantastic finds!!! Congrats Nate!

Nana :)

I copied it and turned it counter-clockwise so it's easier to see

Nice finds Nate, good to see you posting again.

Nice finds Nate, congrats on the silver and awesome ring! HH, Mike

I'm not an expert, but I wonder if the face on the ring isn't the 2-faced Roman god Janus? He's the god of doorways, I think. The month of January was named after him-one face looks into the past and the other into the future. The thing that doesn't make sense is that Janus is usually depicted as having having both sides facing away from each other, not one facing up..very interesting..I would also say that the stone might be carnelian and it's an intaglio. Italian for "carving", an Intaglio is a carved gem wherein the design is engraved or carved into the object so that it sits below the surface plane of the material, as opposed to a cameo in which the design is raised from it's background, ...

Here's something similar from Ebay.

Great finds, WTG !!

Keep @ it and HH!!

Guys, thanks for the interest and info on the ring. Artemis, the design is concave, so I guess it is indeed an intaglio. I wonder when this ring was made.

Civilman, lol, that is interesting. Mine definitely says 7th. And I'm taking a look and I think the 8th is the right one. Weird.
Thanks all.

Hey Nate....We're both right, the Jewish,Orthodox and the Protestant religion's see it as the 8th Commandment and the Roman Catholic's see it as the 7th.......wierd is right.HH!!

Thanks, yes, there's still stuff in some main spots but it takes time to sniff it out, and checking out a few overlooked nooks and crannies can lead to some quick scores as we're realizing. HH

Love the ring especially Nate, congrats on that special treasure!!
A lot of nice finds, congrats!! Keep em coming and thanks!

Smiles!

love the finds ! beautiful ring, looks like a great hunt congrats ;)

Top notch digs Natman.

Thanks for posting such realistic photos. Realistic looking photos of dug coins as they looked when they came out of the ground always gives me a da ja vu feeling.

HH

Nate, nice stuff! That place really does produce :o

I love the cameo ring.

Take care & HH

Nate,
Did the ring come from the same area as the quarters?

Seems to me that the area the quarters came from has hardley been touched! We spent most of the time there closer to the road. The back areas are almost virgin...and there HAS to be more there. Nice stuff!!
