2nd hunt of 2017: Indians, nails and a button!

Today I went back to the spot where I dug the now much discussed ring and started afresh listening to those ground signals. First target was a bit more of that stainless watch band but from a different hole. Many nails were dug but I posted two that look different from the rest; these don't show signs of rust.

There was a button today and it is a first for me....a pewter button.

All coins today were cents and the first of these was an 1875 in VG to F condition. Nearby I dug another Indian....an 1891. Later I would dig a third IHC and, surprisingly it was another 1891. Late in the hunt I came upon an area that gave signals that I interpreted as possible multiple targets and this turned out to be the case. First target in the hole was a mower-damaged wheat nearly on end. On the opposite side of the hole I dug a piece of iron and below that came an 1865 IHC.

Those IH cents cleaned up pretty good, especially the 1875. Congrats on some nice finds!

Thx Tommy G! Sometimes I leave them green but with these I voted for peroxide and then oil. This ends up leaving them brown, but I don't think it took anything away from the appearance of the two older coins. Funny how they fared better than the 1891s.

I've never tried the peroxide. Some say heat up to boiling, others use it at room temp. What is your preference?

I put about a half inch in a margarine tub and heat in microwave on max power for one minute. I leave them in until the solution cools and then brush them. I soak them in oil afterwards. I should try the peroxide without heating and see how it does.

Thanks, McCDig. I think I will give it a shot too (both hot and cold). The only advantage I would see with hot is that it would cause the metal to expand rapidly when dropped into the tub - maybe loosen up some of the grime quicker. Just a thought. Trying both ways will tell the story. Thanks for responding.
