Rifleman's Button (Appears Rare Based on Research)

Skunemonk made these cool button finds at Rev War ear homestead that has produced coins and relics back to the mid 1700s, including some military buttons in the past. Please provide any comments on the button with Bugle at bottom, Script R in the middle and tied Ribbon at the top, thanks. (UPDATE: The Script R appears unique/rarity.)

Your script R button is an early Rifleman's button, probably 1820's-ish.. could be wrong, that's just my hunch since I don't see that exact variant on the web yet.

The 1820ish time frame seems to be it by comparing similiar buttons with known backmarks, although have not seen one with the Script R, so I am sure it is a scarce variant. Nice find!

Re: Old Buttons - ID Needed (Military?)

Cool, thanks, I will send to Don Troiani and post his reply. I just thought of that...

Re: Old Buttons - ID Needed (Military?)

Look forward to the reply. The Royal Rifles used the Bugle but not seen the 'R' before.

Re: Old Buttons - ID Needed (Military?)

Troiani just said it's after 1800 but didn't provide any other details...

Re: Old Buttons - ID Needed (Military?)

Nice one and as everyone above stated, I've not seen that variant of a Riflemens Button with an "R" before...Looks alot like those used by the militia however. Very Nice Find.

Re: Old Buttons - ID Needed (Military?)

Thanks bergie for posting the pics and trying to id the button. That site sure produces lots of finds, tons of flat buttons, large cents, conn copper, KG111. Old silver and i even found a virginia state seal button (sic semper tyrannis) in new york? When you come back we'll have to definitley hit that site again. Thanks to all for trying to id the button!!

Re: Old Buttons - ID Needed (Military?)

Thanks to all, Iron Patch, to answer your question, we have been posting items from this site for a couple years, best coins have been half reale and seated dime...Also, thank you for the info on William Leigh. He said it's a nice early button and he is interested in aquiring it. I'll advise my friend to do a significant amount of additional research to determine value before making any move.

Thank you for that update, UMRgolf, I don't hold grudge against someone trying to make profit especially if it's their main business, I think it's up to the seller to know...the real issue is that these experts know where to find the buyers and so people like us must usually sell at a discount since we don't have access to those key buyers.

That's one nice looking button and congrats!!!

And I agree. William Leigh is a good friend of ours, and he is a very reputable and honest man. He could of just made a mistake with your ID Jeff. :dontknow:

Beautiful button by the way!

I'll be watching this one.

Re: Rifleman's Button (Appears Rare Based on Research)

Seems like I missed something.

Sometimes finding the 2nd or third known is much better than something unique if that's the case here, unless it's well documented. It's not exactly easy to prove something is what you believe just because it looks like it. So this is ID'ed for sure? It does seem like it could be a good button.

:icon_scratch: Someone enlighten me :dontknow:

It's unclear if this is literally first of it's kind, haven't established that yet...
