Happy New Year Everybody.............. (Read Below for update)
Got a late start from home today to get in some dirt diggin. I have permission to hunt a double vacant lot on a creek in the old part of town. I gave it a couple hours a week or two ago and to my disappointment didn't find much until near the end of the hunt when I thought I found an area that might have something old to be found. The ground cover is about 6 - 8 inches high so I put a large coil on my Fisher 1266 to get some depth. Gave it a try and it went bust on me. Nothing interesting to be found.
I had my MXT with me with a 6 inch coil. I decided to try another look around the property where the vegetation is shorter using the small coil due to all the modern trash. I had hunted with the 950 coil on the first hunt.
After getting somewhat discouraged with not coming up with anything good using the small coil I started thinking of hitting another site. About that same time while I was down on my knees digging I heard a big RIP. I tore the entire bottom out of my old jeans. Since the site I was going to go to is in public and where I was hunting is in a remote area I decided to stay put and make the best of it for the little time I had left to hunt.
As I wandered around the property I discovered an area that I had previously overlooked so decided to give it a spin. Within a couple minutes I hit a wheatie near an old sidewalk. A few minutes later another popped up, so now I am thinking there should be some silver nearby.
I moved further back on the property and got a good signal, dug and up popped a merc. Checking the hole again out comes another merc, then another and three wheaties. Obviously an old pocket spill. After checking all around the same area for a while with no more results I moved off about 15 feet and popped a liberty nickel, 1912. The mercs are 1940-41 and 42. The wheats are 1910-25 and 34. Had I not ripped my jeans I would never have found them. I washed the coins with soap and water. They need to cook in the tank for a few minutes. This is a good start for 2008.
I only had a few minutes of day light left so decided to give it a try under an old tree. There were a lot of cans and trash under it that I had to kick out of my way, then got a good hit. I dug a couple pennies then checked the hole and it there was still a good hit, so reached down in the sandy soil and felt around. Wow, it was loaded with coins. They are all pennies. I made a grab on all I could get. I am sure there are some more in the hole, but ran out of daylight and was getting hungry. When I got home I counted 139 pennies, all memorials, darnnnnn... Why not wheaties
? Anyway, they seemed to all be just dumped in the hole. I couldn't make out that they may have been rolled or in any kind of bag, they seemed to have just been dumped and were about 8 to 10 inches down.
I will go back again sometime and try around the tree some more and finish picking out of the hole for the rest of the pennies. I kind of wonder if maybe a kid didn't bury them playing pirate? If so there may be some other buried 'treasure' near by.
The neighbor had told me last week that legend has it pirates came up the creek and buried some treasure. Now that would be fun to find a real pirate stash. I scanned the mercs, nickel and wheaties and took a photo of the penny stash. HH Highwater
I had a chance to go back to the site yesterday and check the hole and go around the tree. I found the other eleven cents which makes the penny count 150. Three rolls of pennies must have been buried. When I dug them I didn't get the impression that they were laying in rolls but maybe I just disturbed them when I dug. The other thing that makes me wonder is if they were all stacked in a row then whey are they in such poor shape. I need to look at them a little closer but did see some of the dates were in the early 80's. Didn't see anything newer. I also went around the tree to see if there was anything else hidden. Didn't find anything else that was interesting. Wonder who buried the pennies and why?
