I’m new here and would just like to introduce myself. I’m Nathan and I’ve been a coin collector for some time. I started coin roll hunting about a year ago but was very uneducated on the art. I was doing a lot of quarters and not finding much. I have since educated myself and in my search have found this site and I’m hooked. I have set up my network of banks (25) which I order from, all seem very helpful and a few have set me up on regular orders of 4 boxes of halves a week. I have several dump banks but am looking for advice on one, a CU which has a coinstar machine with no fees for members. I talked to the manager at 2 branches and was told use it all you want, 10k no problem we don’t service the machine. Anyone have any thought as to how much I should dump at the cu’s?

There's a line from a song called "Back stabbers" that goes...

"...they smile in your face..."

Just try dumping 10K a week total with any branch, and it (usually) goes like this:

--Courier company contacts branch manager to warn of increased fees if the present volume continues....
--Branch manager warns all tellers to be on the look-out for the guy who is unloading the truck into the Coinstar...
--You are lugging your 5 sacks of coin to the machine one day, when you hear.."Mr. ____ we have to talk.."...
--You have a choice of being banned, reducing volume to nothing, or paying fees.....

Courier companies DO charge for their services.
Tellers WILL tell you anything to get your business.
A bank teller's motto is "whack the mole when he pops up, and not one minute sooner."

I wish you no ill, but there is no way I could consistently dump 10K per week at any one branch; I would be history.

So I suggest no more than 1500, and maybe back off to 1000 if they snarl.

Just sayin'...been there.

If they said no problem, then dump lots. Just not too much in a single transaction and trip some red flags.

There is a thread that points out the danger of being cheated by coinstar machines and the general consensus was that more you dumped the more you risked, to the point of some rolling there own coins or making many small dumps!

Coinstar brand (and this one sounds like a Coinstar brand machine) machines are quite well built and generally don't have many errors. The biggest problem you might have is dimes getting counted as pennies, I've heard lots of reports of it, but never seen a bag of pennies with dimes in it or had dimes counted as pennies.

I've found that coin machines are -a lot- better than rolling your own coin, heck, most banks I know of dump all the CWRs in the coin machine because having CWRs is pointless because businesses don't like them.
