Hi Everyone!
I just got my first MD (Ace 350) after growing up around my dad running his MD all over the place. I have very little experience in the hobby myself and have read the 350 manual, watched the Youtube videos for that MD as well as other MD videos, and went out in my back yard last night to get a feel for it. In doing so, I have a few questions (since I'm long winded, I've bolded my questions.)
First, I'm not sure which mode to run in at the beginning. I live near powerlines, and when I set it to Zero mode it immediately starts returning tons of signals, even if I hold the coil in the air. Would there be a reason it would go off so dramatically with the coil in the air?
I'm guessing it is the powerlines, which are about 50 yards away. Sensitivity is set almost to the top (far right) at the default location. I don't want to use discrimination until I get a feel for what pings equal what buried objects and just plan to dig everything at first, and even if I did try discrimiate, what it was showing jumped around so fast I wouldn't know what I was removing.
I switched to Coin mode and that quieted it down. I ran it in the yard and within 10 feet of the back patio I got a "bell" ping and the marker pointed to 25 cents at 6 inches deep. I dug down a bit but gave up after about 8 inches since it is on the part of the grass I walk on a lot and didn't want too big of a hole there. Also, since I still don't know what I'm doing, I didn't want to trust that it was a "real" ping. Any advice when I do my first real swing this weekend? (I've read the FAQ and intro threads.)
What I've learned so far:
1) I'm so excited!
I unboxed the MD yesterday after work and felt like a kid on Christmas.
2) Swinging even a light detector for a few minutes I can tell I'm going to be sore once I spend a few hours at one time doing it.
3) Keeping the coil 1-2 inches off the ground is going to take practice. I don't do the pendellum thing, but am having trouble keeping it off the ground but not too high.
4) I need one of those pointers after all. Swinging the huge coil over a hole is too vague. It is probably doable, but a pointer will make my life easier. In the meantime I like the pinpoint mode.
5) This is a great site so far for information and comraderie! I hope I can be a positive addition to the group.
Best,

Coinhawk
