Hi all: I have an RTG Pro 6" Alum Scoop that is only a few weeks old. It is a good scoop. However, the aluminum handle is turning my hands black every time I use it. I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue and what the solution might be. Perhaps wrapping it, spraying it ???

Thanks for any advice.

Lew

Call Larraine, she'll take care of it. I have two of their scoops and have not had any issues with them.

duh- - ct tape
(I'm sorry I just couldn't help myself)

It's called oxidation. You using it in saltwater I presume? You should spray it off with freshwater after each use. I have a cousin that owns a body/paint shop, I had mine powder coated. You can always spray it yourself with some of that truck bed liner stuff, just give it a quick rubdown with sandpaper and then wipe it down with alcohol first. Here is another thread dealing with this issue- http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/beach-shallow-water/294011-aluminum-scoops.html

Yeah, I wear a light glove on my scoop hand, kinda the "Michael Jackson" look..

just wrap the handle with Gorilla tape - it comes in different colors.

Not made from marine grade aluminum?

Guess not. Would think that it would be a better grade of alum for the price. At least the handle.

Spoke to her this AM. She told me to wrap it.....:laughing7:

So I solved the problem by wrapping the handle with Slazenger Tennis Racquet handle overgrip (white). Good cushion for your hand and stopped the deadly mano nera. Used it in the water this AM and it seems to handle the salt water OK. Now we'll see how long it will last, although it is inexpensive. Have a feeling it will last quite a long time. I used 4-1/2 of the overgrip wraps on the RTG handle and sealed the ends with good electrical tape.

Just a thought, has anyone tried spray on truck bed liner on the scoop handel ? :icon_scratch:

Another idea is to get shrink tubing to put on it. Instuction's are on Google, You Tube, etc..

My last RTG scoop (5" dry scoop) never turned on me, and I never even sprayed it off. The one I have now I painted it before I ever used it so I never had a chance to find out whether it would or not. It was free with the purchase of my last detector (6" water scoop).:dontknow:

ebay sells large dia. shrink tubing or many large scale wire stores

the best
