My neighbor said he saw a TV program that told about a S.Cal. miner that died from spores in the dirt-said this was on this past monday night. Did anyone see this program? I asked him if it was valley fever and he said it wasn't. The guy was mining up in the mountains and uncovered some kind of spore that was on his boots and when he walked into the hospital it contaminated it.

I would sure like to know what this was that is so deadly as I have never heard of such a thing

Thanks,

Randy

Damn . Keep us posted Randy. As if V.F. isn't bad enough .

Desert Fever aka Valley fever killed off the OC 49rs club by the dozen back in the 80-90s AND closed the massive underground max security prison because the prisoners were dropping like flies last year. The CDC has a HUGE gallery of info on this insidious lung rotting virus..WEAR A GOOD DUST MASK or you too can cough to death...seen toooooo many times to righteous great folks who refused common sense because it was too hot....vs death??John

Thanks for posting this, I would have never imagined. Thanks for the resources Goldwasher.

In the 1960s we were tested for VF . 85% of the school kids tested positive for it. As a kid it was no big deal , we just blew it off as a cold. But get some age on you and man,it can kill you. I came down with it again about 15 years ago and it almost killed me.

Interesting, are you sure your neighbor was not watching Season 2 of Scorpion, episode 10 "Arrival & Departures".

I only ask because that is exactly how that show went.

You know he did mention some show named Scorpion but wasn't sure (never watched it myself though). Bingo you nailed it.

-OK, just read the entire plot online. Man my elderly neighbor added stuff that wasn't in the show like some guy in the show had been mining up in the Mountains of LA area and uncovered this toxic mold. This guy then went to the hospital and the mold that was stuck to his boots contaminated the entire hospital. He was so shocked he said he almost dashed over to my house to warn me.

He's one of the early Vietnam Vets and has health issues,God Bless him he meant well. Thanks for clearing this up.
He did save me a cup of coffee but scared the heck out of me!

Hi Seden; Thanks for clearing that up for us. This type of stuff is no joke for sure. Here in Boston about 15 yrs ago an Archaeologist died after he was cut by object he recovered. It had some type of disease on it. The Police cordoned off the whole area which in Boston is no small area. The Health Folks came and removed all the stuff from the site using HazMat Teams. I think they sent it to the CDC down South. I don't know what the type of disease was that killed him. May God Bless Him & His. RIP.
Also there was a case in Boston where 2 idiots broke into a Famiily type tomb and caused a lot of damage. The word got out and every News Media, Cops & Doctors put out an APB on these guys begging them to turn themselves in and that NO Charges would be filed against them because the Authorities were scared about all the unknown diseases that could be in the tomb. That these guys were in fact NOW Diease Carriers and were spreading these diseases everywhere they went. They wre like Modern Typhoid Mary's. They turned themselves in and were SCRUBBED down before they were even allowed into the Hospital here. The Authorities went to each guys houses and cordoned them off until they finished giving them a HazMat cleaning. They even monitored everyone in each guys neighborhoods to make sure no one else got contaminated. They really pulled off a Full Court Press on this one. They held those guys for 30 days at the Hospital in Isolation. They were interegated until they were blue. Serves them right. The Authorities went to EVERY single place these guys went to or touched to decontaminated. It was BIG news here for about 3 months. It was CRAZY.!!! :tongue3: So guys, PLEASE be careful out there ok. I don't want to see anyone hurt. May God Bless All of You & Yours. PEACE:RONB

Early 1970's I was into caves. Exploring one I was bitten by a scorpion plus we had been trying to dig out a side tunnel. Doctor didn't know what I had, but four weeks later it turned into pneumonia and he got really excited because he could treat that. I was deathly ill for a total of 6 weeks and Doc told me later he didn't know if I would make it. Scary and I quit digging. I had been bitten by scorpions before and I knew it was the dirt...

I would not hold it against the poor fella, you can however anticipate future occurrences that may rise to his concern and provide comfort in some way by assuring him that what ever the issue is you are certain that it is being handled by highly trained professionals. It is not really lying to the old man, just showing him that his input is still of great value and that you are thankful for his early warning concerns.

Just a thought.

By the way, that show is utter crap. I got stuck in an SV van some months back for an entire week working in shifts with one of my Team mates; it is either let him pick the shows or listen to him ramble on about how boring SV work is. So he always gets to pick the shows. I remembered it from that and googled it.

I am sure that the old man meant no harm at all and just wanted you to be very careful.

dang you guys trying to scare me? How the heck can I drink beer with a mask on?

A Camel Back bladder full of booze and plumb straw tube into side of dust mask.......Think I'll give it a try next time out drywash'n

NEVER breathe dust! Twice, I came down with pneumonia while plumbing in pool equipment on a windy hillside in Santa Cruz!
And my sister came down with Valley Fever in S. Cal, and it laid her up for better part of a year! I have COPD, and this could kill me!I stay the heck away form deserts!

Maybe some day they will do a show on the Green Gold Mine. Been found many times, but each time the person found out it was gold they took off before finding out it was green from Arsenic. Nobody has ever come back from it the second time. When they just pick up a chunk from outside, they don't have enough exposure to the arsenic, but the second trip is fatal.

Sounds like an old widders tale...Could not find a story about it. Source? region?

That or an I.V. of single malt scotch so you don't take a chance of breaking the seal on the mask..... The Belvine Double Wood will work just fine! Only about $100 a bottle. Come to think about it, isn't that about what the horsepital charges for a bag of regular 5% saline?

EDIT: I saw that episode and found it interesting that they said the guy was mining illegally in a National Forest. The writer must have been a card carrying member of The Sierra Fund or something. That or he didn't know squat about mining and that you can mine in a National Forest. I hate inaccurate info being spread like that. Scorpion is a fun show at times but I lost a lot of interest when I hear that drivel.
