JOHANSBURG (Scrap Monster) : The Gold strike which was scheduled to commence today at all the leading Gold mines of SA as announced by AMCU earlier has been delayed to Jan. 30. However, the Platinum strike will go on from today as planned. The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) had announced last week to go ahead with a strike from Jan. 23 and had issued formal strike notices to the top precious metal producers of the Country.
Gold companies of SA and AMCU headed to the Johansburg labor court yesterday as the miners had requested for an urgent court order declaring today’s strike unprotected. AMCU decided to delay the strike followed by the hearing. Responding to the court verdict, the AMCU Treasurer, Mr. Jimmy Gama said that he respected the court’s decision and has therefore decided to delay the strikes at leading gold producers of the country including AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (ANG) and Sibanye Gold Ltd. (SGL).
AMCU is the powerful labor union of South Africa that represents more than 20,000 mineworkers. They had also planned strike at Harmony Gold Mining Co. (HAR) which includes majority of workers from their union. However, they exerted that they will not delay the platinum strike as scheduled earlier on any grounds and will proceed as announced.
