Measures about 3 inches long.

Believe it is brass, rivets still have leather attached.

1 suggestion it might be a saddle bag id tag?

I Googled his name, and found out he was a train Signal Engineer, and he had a champion sow in 1917. Someone who has a subscription to Ancestry.com could probably find his heirs. I think Bramblefind was a member of Ancestry at one time; you may want to check with her. Neat find :) Breezie

thanks for the replies! I was thinking a dog collar tag...but a friend saw that it belonged to a "sow" or "Boar"....did pigs wear collars?? ;)

That's awesome! I found the same one. I hadn't found any info on children or grandchildren yet, though, so that's pretty cool. I did see a lot of stuff about how he travelled a lot to investigate train wrecks and stuff like that.
