As SB637 glides on through the halls and committees of the state capital, everyone should read this report summary from a previous pilot program, a real tangible program that used a common sense approach and provided a real solution with proven results. This actually happened it was not a theory, conjecture, or a false promise made by an outfit with no practical experience. Then go ask your government officials- What happened? Why was a program with real results at no cost to the taxpayer, a program with no boundaries or limitations not supported and embraced.

Below is an excerpt from the report, take notice of the agency under "Describe any lessons learned", Keeping whose behind 637 in mind, what happened to our champion?

ARCHIVE
Reasons For Archiving:

Complete Date:
Project completed – no more updates

June 2002

What environmental gains / changes / effects did the project produce (before it was archived/before it ended):
Over 300 pounds of mercury was collected from recreational gold miners and other people who brought mercury to collection events.

How would you describe the project?
Very Successful

What obstacles/difficulties did the project face and how did these impact the project's success?
It took a long time to determine the regulations applicable to a mercury collection program and to reach agreement with the state on the regulatory interpretation of RCRA.

Describe any lessons learned:
A clear champion, in this case at the state water agency, was a key to getting the program implemented.

Do you have any suggestions for readers if they choose to try to repeat the project in the future?
Make sure that all regulations are understood as early in the process as possible.

For those that save this type of info to their computers, they are starting to remove alot of this info from the net. You used to be able to type in Region 9 Mercury milk run and the actual site would pop up. Seeing this more and more. The Sierra Fund has also removed a lot of their BS they used to put up.

47 replies for Bering Sea Gold, 3 replies (all mine) for an issue affecting us all in real life. My guess is more folks wrote that tv producer that was on here a month or so ago wanting to be on tv than have written their congressman or representitive! Thank the Lord that our claim is so far out in the sticks, even he has trouble finding it from time to time. I now see why some really good knowledgeable folks have gotten so frustrated and leave, guess the politics and preservation of mining are a bit more important to some of us than others. Well It's mining season so I think I'll follow suit and bid adieu for a while. Let folks get back to pondering the age old debates and really important topics such as pan color, sluice matting material, "is this gold?", and most applicable- the current gold shows latest drama. It's one thing to have all the answers and know what "needs" to be done, that takes no effort at all, but to actually get involved and do something about it- that's a whole new ball game.
