I was shorted just over $283 when a bag containing $1002.00 in dimes counted out as $718.89 in a banks coin machine. After weeks of no news about my missing dimes, I contacted the banks auditing dept. The head teller had not reported my dimes shortage to them. Thank goodness I had her document everything. Their auditing dept is now looking into it.
Apparently they have known about some issues with their coin machine counting errors for some time, and done nothing about it. It had been counting some nickels as quarters and some quarters as nickels. I was dumping halves one day and she asked me to help her to move the heavy halves bag after I had filled it. I looked at the other bags in the machine and seen nickels in the quarters bag and quarters in the nickel bag. I pointed out the coins in wrong bags to her and she said the Fed will catch it when they send the bags in. That should have been a warning sign to me right there, as that means other customers had gotten wrong counts. There was a new empty pennies bag on and I didn't see any dimes in the pennies bag, so I was unaware that it was miscounting dimes as pennies as well. It was a few weeks later and my first time dumping dimes there that I was shorted. I used to just roll them and return them to another bank. They won't sell me bags from the machine either, and I fully understand why. They can't trust the contents of the bags to be right. My halves dumps there were sometimes short by a coin or two from what I knew they should be, but it was not enough for me to complain.
I'm rolling all dimes and quarters now. I added dual resettable counters to my coin sorters. After running a batch of coins, I reset both counters, pour the dumps back into the sorter hopper, and run on low speed as a coin counter. I stop and reset counter 1 as it reaches each lot of 40 quarters or 50 dimes, counter 2 keeps a running total of all counted in the batch.
I still dump bags of pennies at that bank, hard to get shorted much on pennies. When I bring them in, I hand them a slip of paper with the count my sorter came up with on the final counting pass. They compare my numbers with their coin machine count, and so far it's been within a few cents. It looks like I can only trust their coin machine to cash in my bulk pennies
I'm going to give them a few more weeks to audit and find my missing dimes. If nothing is done to correct the error by then, I might be filing a small-claims action against them. Had it been just a few bucks I wouldn't be bothered by it, but I'm not going to just accept that big of a hit without a fight.
