The Christmas rush was over and it was 35 degrees with no snow. What's a girl to do but go hunting? I headed for a new farm house that I just received permission to hunt. Research shows that there was a house here at least as far back as 1873. The owner is working on the current house so the yard is pretty torn up. Not long into the hunt I got a good signal and came up with a dirt-covered quarter. I could just make out a seated Lady Liberty, my first! :headbang: A while later I got another good signal and fought through some roots for a coin. Gently cleaning showed an 1865 2 cent....another first! Best relic was a pocket watch cover. It was a nice sunny day and a lot of fun rescuing a couple of oldies from the dirt. :)

HH and thanks for looking,
Michiganne

First congrats :hello2: on your first seated, and holy cow, what a seated! :headbang: Incredible condition!

Great finds on both coins , that seated is in amazing condition. Congrats on the finds.

OMG... Am I the only 1 here that has not dug a seated coin yet? BTW Nice find!

Congrats on your first Seated and it's a sweet one too!! :headbang: Nice 2 cent as well!

Congrats on some great finds... That 2 cent is in GREAT condition.

Those are two beautiful coins!!!

Both coins are in amazing condition. Seriously take my advise and dont even bother trying to ID a coin in the field. I may be an amateur but I was told 3 days ago that i took $400 off the value of an 1877 cc seated quarter I found (also first seated), by just carrying it home dirt covered in a small zipped good finds pouch. Dirt is like sand paper even when wet. I found a local jewelry store owner who is also a collector. He offered me $100 for the coin but said he would have offered 500 without the recent surface scratches. I now am attempting to develop a better method for dirty coin field storage. Anyone else have a good method let me know. Ps after meeting this guy I can bring him any coin ball from an old site and he will clean them profesionally for free just because he is just as excited as I am to uncover what I found. HH and wow on your finds

Congrats on two awesome coins!!!I have dug a bunch of Seateds but not one 2 center!

Beercan, yes hard lesson learned. My last Seated Quarter (just a couple weeks ago)was encased in a nice plug when I dug it,only the reeded edge showing,I cautiously broke it open and there on the face was a fine scratch(new)it was from the ground shifting when I dug it....that cant be avoided but just shows ya how soft silver is.Gold is even worse and will scratch like butter!!!I carry a pill container, with cotton and wrap the coin in wet/damp toilet paper or paper towel, and very gently fold the coin in that after very gently removing any large chunks of dirt. Then place that in your container and pack cotton in to keep everything firm.A lot of people claim they will never sell,or its been in the ground for xxx years but someday your kids may thank you and I beleive it is our responsibility for giving these finds we dig the utmost care and respect....why damage them? :dontknow:

wow they look to be brand new , nice finds

Congratulations on 2 first! Those coins are in beautiful condition.

Back off kayden.....I haven't even found an Indian Head yet, in fact, I have only found one or two coins older than I am!! Nothing standing, walking, sitting or laying down, but, I have found a few Mercs!!!

Nice digs. Both those coins are in great shape. Good research and great hunt!

Congrats on 2 nice looking coins. I have found a Seated quarter but the 2 cent piece is still on my wish list.

Thanks for all the great comments guys! Regarding coins and field cleaning/scratching, I will confess there is a fresh scratch on the face of the Seated that I'm sure I put there somehow. :-\ I know enough not to rub dirt off silver coins and did walk back to the car and rinse it off with water. But I put it in my jeans pocket and took it out a couple times to admire while hunting. And once I found the 2 center I stuck it in the same pocket, which I realize now was a dumb thing to do. ::) I need to come up with a coin carrying system like Kuger mentioned above, but honestly I rarely find two great coins in the same hunt. :laughing7:
The 2 center has a ding on the edge near "of" that I probably did while trying to get through a bunch of roots. So, still learning here as well!

A seated coin was at the top of my 2012 wish list. Time to rethink the wish list. :)

HH,

p.s. Here is a pre cleaning pic from the field of the seated.
