The Christmas rush was over and it was 35 degrees with no snow. What's a girl to do but go hunting? I headed for a new farm house that I just received permission to hunt. Research shows that there was a house here at least as far back as 1873. The owner is working on the current house so the yard is pretty torn up. Not long into the hunt I got a good signal and came up with a dirt-covered quarter. I could just make out a seated Lady Liberty, my first! :headbang: A while later I got another good signal and fought through some roots for a coin. Gently cleaning showed an 1865 2 cent....another first! Best relic was a pocket watch cover. It was a nice sunny day and a lot of fun rescuing a couple of oldies from the dirt. :)

HH and thanks for looking,
Michiganne

Those are 2 sweet coins. Both are in great shape too. That seated should be up on top in my opinion ::) What a way to end the year. 2 first's and no snow in Michigan :dontknow: Have a safe and Happy remaining 2011 and a prosperous New one. Regards, Ron :icon_sunny:

Wow! awesome condition,congrats!

First off, those are some GREAT finds! It is lovely to dig the quarter with rays. My first seated half was the with rays year. That 2c looks stellar too. Bravo!

Both coins are in amazing condition. Seriously take my advise and dont even bother trying to ID a coin in the field. I may be an amateur but I was told 3 days ago that i took $400 off the value of an 1877 cc seated quarter I found (also first seated), by just carrying it home dirt covered in a small zipped good finds pouch. Dirt is like sand paper even when wet. I found a local jewelry store owner who is also a collector. He offered me $100 for the coin but said he would have offered 500 without the recent surface scratches. I now am attempting to develop a better method for dirty coin field storage. Anyone else have a good method let me know. Ps after meeting this guy I can bring him any coin ball from an old site and he will clean them profesionally for free just because he is just as excited as I am to uncover what I found. HH and wow on your finds

I wouldn't take any coin to someone without breaking open the dirt clod or knowing what it was first! Similarly to what kuger does, I keep a medicine bottle packed with cotton balls in my pocket (CLEAN cotton balls), and when I find a silver, holding it by the edges, blast it with water to bust some of the dirt off. Then it goes in the cotton ball jar. When I get home, only camel's hair make up brush WHILE the water is running to gently tease the remaining dirt out of the grooves and design. This works ONLY after soaking the coin to loosen the dirt.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

yes, exactly,if you dont have water nearby,I always have a water bottle.

As I stated sometimes a small scratch is unavoidable,I would fret too much but its better to be over cautious.....my diggin partner just hit a gold coin....talk about wanna beat yourself up!!

You never know, mcmich! If the snow continues to hold off, its a possibility. It was pretty chilly out there today. :P

Thanks for your kind replies everyone. :icon_thumleft: On the days when I'm slogging through a muddy cornfield, in knee deep corn stubble, and there's a cold wind blowing and wet snow is sticking to my coil and the finds aren't there.....you are all my inspiration! :icon_sunny:
