We find similar artifacts around here. They were used for more than just hammering. It could be an artifact used for "scooping" like a spoon, ladle, or cup. Thats what they are usally classified around here as. Btw I am nowhere near a beach. We also find sharks teeth.

You find fossil shark teeth from a time when where you live was under the ocean.
Wouldn't make a very good dipper with a big hole in it.

Your right about the sea levels but you would find the sharks teeth and shells in a different layer of dirt/earth than your artifacts. We find them in campsites. Fill up a bucket with water put your hand in the hole to hold the shell and try it. See if you can scoop up water with it. Bet you can.

Sure you could scoop up water with it but the hole is where the handle would have went in and the wear on the bit end isn't from dipping up water or scooping water.

Something like this.

I have large ones that are basically a half of large whelk as well.

As far as the shark teeth.. I'll just leave that one alone.

Fossil shark teeth are everywhere in Florida.. Natives found them too.
But they also killed alot of sharks and used the teeth.. there's a big difference.
