duh...duh... DFX
My son and I climbed down into a steep ravine last night along the Cuyahoga River where there used to be a boardwalk, roller coaster and dance hall in the mid-1800's through the first two decades of the 1900's. The river was then dammed and the entire amusement area was submerged. While difficult to get to, the area produced very few finds (compared to what I expected) due to an unbelievable amount of twisted rusted steel, trashed scattered appliances, rusted cans and such. I wish that the city would reclaim the area and clean it up. There's talk about removing the dam and restoring the river to it's original flow. From the 1800's pics I have seen, this would expose many caves and such where tons of folks used to hike through.
We ended up with an IH that has a completely corroded obverse (no date or even bust), a 1918 Merc (which I cleaned as it was REAL crappy as found...tarnished black and sand encrusted) an old bullet and some type of lead seal, old shotgun shell and the top of an old compact case (got that brief rush when I saw it in the hole...but nope...only a lid)
Hope you enjoy the pics. Dunno how much hunting I'll do there. It's kinda treacherous getting down into the area. Climbing cliffs while toting a shovel and the DFX isn't fun.
HH all!

Total finds (less the trash dug)

Nice! Sounds like it could be a good spot! Can you get to it by boat?

It would have to be a canoe or kayak (we saw several folks there doing this) as there's no launch facility on this stretch.
It might be worth it though, as on the other side of the river is a 3/4 mile long cut stone aqueduct that was built in the 1800s to direct water to what was supposed to be a new city...Summit City...which was planned on being a large industrial hub to Akron Ohio and it's rubber factories. For some reason the aqueduct was never finished and Summit City never realized. The stonework is all there and THAT side of the river no DOUBT has far less trash to deal with. Old time pictures of the amusement area show LOTS of people on that side as well.

Good research and fortitude to reach that spot!

Neat story Danimal. That place would be very productive if it could be cleaned up like you said.
I'd bet theres a lot of cool stuff there but probably deep...

Keep safe...

You always do good research, bud! Keep it up! 8)

One can never stop doing ra-search in the quest for wilver! I would have done some type of chicken dance or such in your honer Kirk, but I might have fell off a cliff doing so, so I was happy with just a quick fist pump.

Thanks for showing the photos.

All you guys need to do is find where the "young drunk Cleveland roughs" hung out!

Congratulations on the research and the relics and Merc!

Since you are running a white's, if you have not already tried it, use a small coil in that stuff. The shovel will make it easy to dig lots of targets.Old fairgrounds? might be a gold coin hiding somewhere.

Was using a small DD coil last night, not the stock coil. Thanks anyways for the tip!

Funny you say that Ridley! I was on my hands and knees crawling into a small cave opening (which opened up quite large once in) and swinging the coil out in front of me while trying to avoid what spiderwebs I could see....all the while Spencer freaking out saying how nasty it looked back in there and how crazy I was for going in!
Times have changed. When I was 13 I would have been the first to crawl back into the cave. He asked my why I was doing it and I said "because that where I would have gone"
Nothing back in there tho... >:(

Dan,
Great post. When you started talking about crawling into a cave, the 1970's movie "TROG" came to mind. ;D Not sure if you are old enough to remember that classic? ;D
Congrats on the IH & Merc. That's Merc's an oldie!
I'm still looking forward to your stagecoach stop hunt this year. Have you hit that place since last winter?
Ridley and I also have one lined up for winter (after deer season is over ;) ). That is if he let's me find a few wilvers soon. ;D
Congrats,
MM

Duuude....I just turned (June 21st) the ripe ol' age of 47, so yeah...I remember Trog :D

Bob (Mirage) and I were just talking about the Stagecoach Stop a few minutes ago on the phone. We're trying to predict the level of overgrowth and whether it'd be worth the drive and hike this time of year.
We're also considering the first night hunt at the Berg (cooler temps)
Rock on!

Dan,
Looks like we're both 47 then. ;D
I would need a blowtorch and dynamite this time of the year to get into the stagecoach stop Ridley and I want to detect. I think he's pretty handy with a weed whacker though? I may just tie a rope to him and send him in.
It's all for a good cause. ;D
Good luck,
MM
