Steve and I got out to the copper field site I hunted alot last year. We started the hunt in an area that had produced alot of iron hits last year. I knew it was a former homesite. This is the same area where i found the 1864 2 cent piece last week. If you look at this picture carefully you can see Steve way over in the corner of the field (In the red circle)

About 20 minutes into the hunt I got a semi-solid hit that was wavering from the 60's to the 70's in the VDI range. The reason i say semi-solid hit is because although the VDI number wasn't steady, the tone was solid, not broken like an iron signal would be. It pinpointed at 4 1/2 inches. I turned over some dirt and sifted it and saw a copper disc. Yeah baby!! :headbang: My fifth large copper of the year. It's an 1845 braided hair large cent. Unfortunately it is holed :P This is the third braided hair large cent I've found and the years are consecutive, 1845, 1846, 1847.

Did everybody see my "ghetto" home depot treasure apron in the picture? :D ;D I only use the best equipment. I also dug a harmonica reed in this area. Then we relocated to another field nearby. Here is a picture of the field. We didn't find much here on this trip although i have recovered some nice artifacts in this field.

We moved again to another plowed area and i recovered a nice colonial button. It has a nice design on the front. Most buttons this size that I've found don't have designs on the front so I was pleased with this one.

Not many targets dug today. Kind of slow. I knew when I dug the large copper 20 minutes into my day that the 1 coin jinx might hit me. I was right. Oh well. :tongue3: At least i got one. :D

I found this Ball mason jar on one of my last hunts. It was intact so i picked it up and noticed a date on it. July 14 1908. Is this how old the jar is or does the date signify something else?

Thanks for the response Zoy. Halfway there with 7 or 8 good months of hunting to go. I usually shut it down before December. I can't stand the cold. :o

Nice LC and Button. At least the hole in the LC is a nice clean hole. ;D It's also not that bad a shape.....

Wow, those fields are big. You could spend a lot of time at either of those sites pictured and still not cover much of the area.

I agree. I certainly spent alot of time trying to cover the area last year. Maybe I'll get it finished this year, or maybe not. The good thing about plowed fields is they tend to keep producing every year after a fresh plow.

Congrats on the copper and all the other great finds! The date on the jar is a patent date, not the date it was made. Very nice to find the old jar intact like that! Good luck finding more goodies!

Thanks for the help. Is there any way to determine the date of the jar itself? I'm just curious and i don't know much about these type of finds.

Great digs Evo and congrats on another large cent. By the way....you are "stylin' and profilin' in that Home depot apron. ;D

Thanks silverfreak. And my jeans are about four sizes too big for me. Much more comfortable to hunt that way. I'm glad i remembered my belt. :tard: :tongue3:

very nice finds, and I was happy with one large cent this year.

Nice button and nice jar. I would also agree with the fore mentioned. The patent date is just that. However, the jar is still pretty old.

congrats on the holed copper. There are many different ideas out there as to why coins were holed, that is the large coppers. They surely seemed to be to heavy to have been holed to wear around the neck, or sew into clothing. :) I do know one of the most logical explanations I have heard was they were nailed to the house indicating the date of construction. I have not heard this from any archaeologists, but there does seem to be a pattern of finding a Large Cent that is dated to the time the structure was built.

My wife's nephew while reconstructing his home found an Indian Head Penny under the front door wooden threshold board and the date was in fact the date the structure was built. He told us he heard that was a common practice in the 1800's to place one under the threshold for good luck?

Anyway, sounds good to me. One good possibility for sure.

I have also read something similar about a recent excavation of the slave quarters of George Washingtons home in Philly during his presidency, that a coin dated the year of construction was placed on the foundation of the home. I would guess there were certain variations on this. The question regarding being sewn into clothing is simply, would it be accepted as currency if it was holed?

Hey, Rob, congrats on finding your 5th large Coppa so far this year!! Nice Colonial button too!!

There's nothing wrong with your outfit...I like wearing baggy jeans too. I finally got rid of my old canvas White's aprons and had a tailor make a few plain, navy blue, aprons for me.
