Metal Detecting
Hi all. Got out today on a beautiful day here in Ne Pa. I decided to drive out in the country about 45 minutes away to a site owned by a wonderful elderly lady. She allowed me to hunt a piece of her property several weeks ago that was an old bank. On that day, she told me 2 men had detected her yard when she and her husband first purchased the property many years ago. The house was a hotel with bar back in the day, and the 2 men found lots of coins between the bar and the double outhouse the site used to have. Thinking technology surely has improved since then, I asked her permission and she said " go anywhere you want on my property". Wonderful old lady, did I say that already?
Finds included the 43 Washington, a 57 wheat, some clad, a cast Renwal toy car ( I thought it was a Tootsie ), the lid from an Elgin American Art Deco compact, some toy guns, and my favorite find~~what I hope is a WWII military pin.

Sorry for being so pic heavy but I have to include the pics of a couple of her outbuildings. I LOVE the architecture of Pa's old barns.

Congrats on the drought end. Nice silver!

Thanks Ray! My last was a Rosie last fall. Now that the hardest one is outta the way, they should be easy:laughing7:
The site was way out in the middle of Amish country. The only lookey-Lou's I had were a farmer planting his crop and an Amish buggy that went by. One of the women turned around to see what I was doing, lol.

That is a nice piece of silver, and other goodies as well. keep at it.

Have confidence in the fact that you found silver that the two other hunters missed!

Nice way to end the drought, nice quarter.

Great finds Dude! Thanks for sharing...

Looks like some sweet hunting grounds Old Dude. Congrats on the silver!

Dude, now if you found a quarter, I would think there would be some other coins they missed. I bet you didn't expect to see a silver quarter, how deep was she?
Good for you!

Almost all targets were in the 4 in area, Treb. To be honest, those 2 guys must have been cherry picking to have left so much junk targets. Like I said, I was really hoping and expected they had missed something. I almost wish I had waited till after this heavy rain we are getting right now. The ground was pretty dry yesterday. I wonder what I missed too, lol.

Nice way to end the drought... hopefully the flood gates will open next and the silver will just roll in.

That symbol on the pin is for the U.S. armored division , the 3 at the top indicates it's the 3rd armored division,The "Spearhead" division . The division was deactivated in 1992 . Not sure if the military issued them.

Thanks, Dave! I have found patches exactly like this that came off uniforms ( supposedly, lol ). I posted the pin on the What Is It forum and a helpful gentleman found an exact match to this one. Am hoping to get a definitive answer to whether it is a military issue or a commemorative one. Thanks again for the info!
The lady wanted to see my finds and so when I showed her the pin, she said she thought it was military. She used Mother's Cleaner ( spit on her finger! ) and rubbed it a bit. I felt so obligated to give her something and so I asked her if her husband or son had been in the military. She said " No, it isn't theirs. It could really be anyone's." I think she was alluding to the fact that it was a hotel/bar decades ago. From this, I am pretty confident it is vintage.
She made it clear from the beginning that she wanted no finds but just wished to see what I find. She is a retired school teacher and is still very inquisitive.

That's the thing about droughts, at some point they end. I've been very lucky in that I seem to at least find 1 piece of something silver every month I hunt. Sometimes it's the 1st day sometimes the last but I still usually get something.

People say they don't want any of your finds but show up with a treasure chest and see what happens. LOL
Still, to a tee, everyone is super inquisitive about just what history they've been walking over for years.
They're always amazed to see something come out from the ground that was actually used in the Civil War and right from
under their own feet! :)

WTG!

I almost always get that old joking reply" Sure go ahead but if you find a million dollars, half is mine!"
Is it déjà vu or did we not just have a conversation about not fretting over finding silver, lol?

Nice finds OLD DUDE ...

Always so nice when you run into nice folks ..she can prolly tell you of a lot of local history to help ya find some good spots also.

I stopped in to a older gentlemans place yesterday to give him some lobster I had promised for letting me hunt his property.....1 hour later I finally got outta there..he told me about quite a few places to go detecting. They are a wealth of information.

Sweet looking silver Od, I sure miss that in the water here in the bay, all comes up crusty.. Like the toys also, brings back a few memories.
