Metal Detecting
Hi all. Got out today on a beautiful day here in Ne Pa. I decided to drive out in the country about 45 minutes away to a site owned by a wonderful elderly lady. She allowed me to hunt a piece of her property several weeks ago that was an old bank. On that day, she told me 2 men had detected her yard when she and her husband first purchased the property many years ago. The house was a hotel with bar back in the day, and the 2 men found lots of coins between the bar and the double outhouse the site used to have. Thinking technology surely has improved since then, I asked her permission and she said " go anywhere you want on my property". Wonderful old lady, did I say that already?
Finds included the 43 Washington, a 57 wheat, some clad, a cast Renwal toy car ( I thought it was a Tootsie ), the lid from an Elgin American Art Deco compact, some toy guns, and my favorite find~~what I hope is a WWII military pin.

Sorry for being so pic heavy but I have to include the pics of a couple of her outbuildings. I LOVE the architecture of Pa's old barns.

Nice finds OLD DUDE ...

Always so nice when you run into nice folks ..she can prolly tell you of a lot of local history to help ya find some good spots also.

I stopped in to a older gentlemans place yesterday to give him some lobster I had promised for letting me hunt his property.....1 hour later I finally got outta there..he told me about quite a few places to go detecting. They are a wealth of information.

Yes Sir, you are absolutely right! She had 2 foundation walls from another long gone outbuilding that were stacked stones on one part of her lawn. I noticed someone ( probably the person that mows ) had knocked some of them down. She did allow me to pick them up and stack them for her. When I left, I asked if she had any favorite foods so I could bring her some. She shyly said "Oh no! Don't you dare!". I could tell just my offer pleased her. Whenever someone is gracious enough to allow me to detect their property, I always offer help them do yard work or help in some way. We need to appreciate the generosity of others. This is something that would not have even been debated years ago.

Sweet looking silver Od, I sure miss that in the water here in the bay, all comes up crusty.. Like the toys also, brings back a few memories.

Thank you! I have a friend that has been very good to me over the years. His youngest daughter collects old cast cars, so that one will be going to her.
I see you are in Ocean City. That is a super popular vacation spot for locals here. I bet you've found jewelry from this area, lol. Nice to meet you:coffee2:

Some people are funny with seeing our finds, my last site the owner wanted to see my finds so i pull out my seated, barbers, and indians and shes all like "oh thats nice" and "seems like alot of work for such a small return"..........NICE? SMALL RETURN? Omg if she only knew how happy those 3 little dimes made me. Literally made my year. And on the other hand, I once gave a homeowner 1.35 in clad I dug because he asked for it

It's really hard to explain this hobby to people. Almost any time people at work ask if I found anything on my days off and I say yes, they want to know " what's that worth?". When I say I don't know or not much, they look at me like I am crazy for even doing it.
My elderly widow neighbor's son usually mows her grass. He and his wife were on vacation, so I told her I would mow her grass so it wouldn't get out of hand. She wanted to pay me, but I said " You've already paid me. You let me md your yard". She couldn't believe I would do that for the one lone Wheat I had found, lol.

Yes alot of people think I do it for profit and I have to convince them it's literally hobby and I have everything I've ever found. I get asked all the time what's it worth what's it worth and I usually end up telling them I don't sell anything. like I said one lady tells me seems like a lot of work for a little return it's not the dollar value to me

Nice! Sweet silver! The pin has a tank on it, nice piece!

What's it worth, what's it worth? Now, gee, I wonder where they ever got that concept!?! :dontknow:

I have been in a position, back when I first started, where this hobby became part of my budget out of necessity. Too many mouths to feed.
It's partly why I gave up the "hobby". It became work. Now, finally, I go and come as I please and whatever Blingie doesn't steal, will be in my Will. ;)

But, it is very true that people can't understand an idiot walking for hours and hours to dig up a few pennies. If a silver coin shows, the entire time expenditure is justified. I've had many just look at me sadly and walk away. (poor ole demented soul! doesn't he know that competition and cash are the ONLY things worth anything in the world!!?? ) A hobby, purely for the enjoyment of pursuing history?!?! Sick!!!

Go play the lottery! Your odds are just as good. :)

WTG OD!! Silver is always good & lots of other goodies too. WTG, Q.

Hiya Mr. Q! I've missed the antics of the Tn Trio. I sure hope you guys get out very soon. I was just on the phone with my sister and she was telling me about some fellow with a detector up on the mountain behind her house in search of a Confederate campsite he had researched. I asked her if he had a big, beautifully groomed moustache! You fellows haven't been making raids across the border into Ky, have you?

Great post and great finds OD! Very nice

Finally back from surgery/vacation. Great post Buddy. Congrats on the silver. Can you imagine what coins those other guys must have found? :dontknow: That spot looks beautiful. I've never heard of that toy car brand. I would have guessed Tootsie Toy also. Very cool.
-DUHg-

Wb from your surgery/vacation ( I will have to look that up in the oxymoron dictionary ). I was wondering if you had taken a sabbatical with the trio. Thanks for the words. Yes, I have imagined the coins those guys must have found! Every tone was one until I dug it, lol. Hope you're well.
