Silver keepers & an Altoids tin filled with goodies

Hello to all!

All good things come to an end. I went back out to the hot area I have been covering the past month or so to search a park and the last school in this school distict that I haven't searched yet. It was another beautiful Michigan day. We have been blessed with awesome weather this summer expecially on Saturdays which is when I normally have the time to get out and do the longer hunts. I was happy to be out there swinging!

I hit the park first, crack of dawn, before the holiday partiers arrived. It had a nice sized play area covered with woodchips.

I was kept pretty busy, a nice assortment of finds and a lot of coins. Also found a buried pot pipe. One keeper which was a large and heavy earring marked "Sterling" so I was happy to have a keeper in my pouch for the day. My most interesting find of the day was a metal Altoids tin found in the center of the area by the play structure. I opened it up and yes, it has stuff in it. Ten coins (modern) 1 quarter, 2 dimes, 2 nickels, and 5 pennies and 4 pull tabs...lol. A cache of pulltabs, what a fine treasure I found!! It's a rusty mess inside it with all the dissimilar metals in there but a cool find none the less.

After the park, I drove accross town (at least 5 miles away) to hit the last school I had to search. When I arrived, I saw this. :-\

Fresh Chips.webp

Big piles of fresh woodchips ready to be smoothed out for the beginning of school on Tuesday. Bummer. One week too late. I did get out and cover the areas that were exposed and found a few coins and trinkets. I decided to go hit the grassy area of a different school, back accross town again, the place I found two gold rings at about 4 weeks ago. As I was leaving, I noticed a pile of stuff in the grass next to part of the parking lot. It was 10 pairs of rubber coated gloves scattered all over the place. Cool, I use these while metal detecting to keep my hands clean and protect me from getting cut by sharps in the holes. I snagged them all up. They are new, never used but just to be safe, I am running them through the wash. A 5 year supply of MD'ing gloves!! Probably about $40 value as they are at least $4 to $5 a pair. Cool!

I drove to the other school and the grass there hadn't been mowed in a while, it was really long. Oh well, I still gridded out the area near where I found the gold rings and covered it anyway. I found lots of coins and did manage one nice keeper ring. It's an Avon ring with a flower and stem design maked "Sterling". I'll take it. I also dug a Boyscout neckerchief. Those are fun to find!

Keepers.webp

So no gold today but I am not complaining as I have found more then my share the past few weeks. I'll take the 2 silver keepers and smile happily! My streak of 200 plus coin saturday hunts also ended (7 in a row). I managed 188 coins for a face value of $11.33 in 5 hours hunt time. Time to find some new places to hunt to wind down the season. I am scheduled to meet a couple local guys who are TNet members next weekend for a schoolyard hunt. We'll see how that goes. It should be fun.

Thanks for reading and HH to you all. Here's my pile of todays finds.

Smiles!

Awesome finds and post Bdoo! HH, Mike

Re: Silver keepers & an Altoids tin filled with goodies

Excellent post. Even on slower days (if 188 coins is a slow day), you keep your title:

"King of the Woodchips".

Excellent.

Sweet finds Bobby. Can't believe those necklaces aren't silver! I've run into several of those wood chip piles. One of the tot lots had it all in one big pile so I quickly hit everyplace else. One good thing though, once those chips are down the kids & adults will start losing things again. I hate it when the chips are real hard and skimpy...everything stays on top & they can find them too easy.

Nice finds. I Like the Altoids tin the best. In the 80's we would try to pop off the pull tabs with the rivet holes intact. We called those "F" tabs if you got four they were "redeemable with the girl of your choice". Just like running yellow lights, if you get four in a row your gonna get "it". But you got to kiss your fist and punch the roof of your car when you run each one. :) AAAAHHH those Days :'( :P
