I guess this qualifies as "today" even though it was found last evening in Manassas Va
The button is silver or pewter, probably colonial but maybe civil war era, civilian or whatever.

Nice old button, What kind of reading/tone did it give?

Check out "Tombac buttons" More that likely it is colonial. I recently found a Revolutionary War campsite and this was the same button that I found. Colonial Flat Button.

The site was a trading post near the port of Dumfries since 1700's so Colonial would be my guess too.

My button has a slight off green hue on the back which makes me think more pewter, front has more "silver" coloring.

Thanks
