Hunting at my families property is always a rewarding experience. It being occupied consistently since 1790 by my family there is no shortage of finds and trash, literally multi signals per square foot. So after upgrading my equipment, I decided to use a smaller coil and work on separation. Being that I was pressed for time I decided to only dig strong silver targets.
My first hit was a Silver wedding band, followed by a 1914 dime... then it happened, I hit what I thought was the broken end off a silver spoon.. after wiping it and seeing STERLING in all caps on the back wiped the front to see "C Mc D" Knowing my family tree as well as I do.. I knew right away I was holding my Great Great Uncle Charles MacDonald's Clip. It is too small to be a money clip, it is also quite small to be a tie clip... even though they did wear some skinny ties back then. If anyone could tell me what this clips purpose might have been would be greatly appreciated. Although I was quite excited to rescue a long lost family artifact I continued to hunt hitting another silver ring and an 1920 dime. Much love to small coils!

Thanx for reading! HH!

Sweet property you have to hunt, congrats!

Oh man I love this post! What an amazing opportunity you have to recover these special family pieces. To be able to recover one that you can tie to a specific family member is a dream. Big congrats on an amazing experience. Thank you for allowing the rest of us to share it with you

Thank you Ahab, It's amazing to me to hold something that my dad's mom's mom's dad's brother dropped 100 years ago! It is a pretty awesome feeling.

One of my ancestors settled about 20 minutes from my house in 1718. His family barely escaped an Indian raid that left him homeless and saw all of his cattle killed. He was only there for a couple years but I hopefully can someday get permission to even spend some time standing on the same ground that this brave settler stood on. Thanks again for a fantastic post and story

history is especially cool when it is something that belonged to one of your own ancestors, a real blast from the past. congrats on all.... silver is always cool!

That piece reminds me a bit of an antique napkin clip. Prob not but they used to have some very nice little engraved napkin clips

Well it was found on the side lawn near a 200 year old oak tree... possible picnic drop? I think wondering about the "how" is a bit more fun when you know the "who"

Nice! Thanks for sharing...

Holy... that money clip is awesome. You got my Banner vote!

It sounds like an excellent place to hunt, Sorry I cant help on the clip ID but the small coil is a good choice, when I get a place like that I do the same.
Congrats.

Great story !!! Great recovery !!!

Great finds ! I think Ahab's theory about a napkin clip for an upscale picnic , is a very good one - I'm a touch surprised that nobody
has confidently identified this one yet .

Amazing finds and family find at that, very cool. Wish I could help you with the clip, somebody will come up with what it it no doubt. HH

I have seen some similar ones before that are pretty small and often monogrammed. But it is just a guess I could be way off

Awesome finds! Really neat the family connection!

Finds with known history are some of the best ones! Big congrats OneWetKnee !!!

I found out about the history of a gold engraved stick pin my detector had found, on showing it to one of my Uncles! He was so glad that I had found the pin that his Mother had lost back in 1939, he had spent three days looking for it! He was very happy that it was in the hands of a family member! He told me that it was made from a 5 $ gold piece by a jeweler for him.
